Just Hit 50: My Experience

Nauticas

Recommended Posts

I just wrote this to SWTOR feedback and thought I would share it here.

I hit level 49 last night on my main character. My main character is a level 49 Jedi Guardian on Vulkar Highway name Nauticas. 95% of the time I have played the game has been on this character. I also have a level 13 Commando on the same server. I have a wide variety of MMO experience covering almost 10 years. I started with Final Fantasy and have played (in no particular order) Star Wars Galaxies, World of Warcraft, Warhammer, EVE, and Planet Side.

Overall, I have really enjoyed the leveling experience in SWTOR. The class quests are very engaging and the voice over with cut scenes adds a lot to the questing experience. I have felt little to no grind in my leveling experience. I have done all the dungeons once or twice and PvPed in warzones quite a bit on my journey to 50. The only real complaint I have had during the leveling experience is the lack of world PvP. I understand how the instancing works, but I believe it may have been done too frequently as seeing an Imperial came too far and inbetween.

Questing

I believe you hit this out of the ballpark. Questing has been very fun and enjoyable. The voice overs and the storylines have been very interesting and really keep you engaged in doing the quests. The voice over element kept me interested in the quests and I very rarely space barred through the content. I cannot tell you how many times I did not read quests in other MMOs and I consider my self an avid quest reader. Meaning, in WoW and Warhammer I read through probably 70% of the quests. I did notice the usual pattern of collect 8 of these and/or kill 10 of them, but I did not mind because I felt engaged in what I was doing.

World PvP

I think the game missed the boat on this. One of the most fun times I ever had playing in an MMO was when I leveled my 2nd character in WoW and I got to the Stranglethorn Vale questing area. I had so much fun running into the other faction and PvPing out in the open where anything can happen. I did not feel that SWTOR had any zones that felt this way. I felt very separated from the other faction and I honestly only came across about 10 to 15 Empire during the whole leveling experience. This is a problem in my opinion. What is the point of having a PvP server if you hardly ever see the opposing faction.

Warzones

I've really enjoyed Hutball and Alderaan. The maps are well sized and have fun game play. I think the timing on the fire in Hutball needs to be adjusted. I think you have to wait too long for the fire to stop before you can cross, in other words, the fire last too long. Voidstar is alright, but I am a melee class and that warzone really caters to range classes. The map layout is a bit bland, but I do enjoy force pushing people off of the bridge.

Companions

What a great idea. I have really enjoyed playing with my companions and it has really allowed me to stay in a tank spec while questing. Being spec'ed for tanking has never worked for me in other games while questing, except SWTOR. I recommend getting all of the companions earlier than 40+. I really have had no opportunity to play with Sergeant Rusk or my Sith Lord because you get them so late in the leveling experience and once I hit 50 I don't see much of need for them in combat. I would have like to get them earlier, maybe early 30's so I could enjoy them more in the leveling experience.

Crafting

The crafting seems a bit bland and is not interesting in its current state. I really miss the crafting in Star Wars Galaxies and would be nice to see more of a sandbox approach be brought to crafting. The state the crafting is in now is just like every other MMO. Once you I hit max level I will hardly ever craft which makes me feel like my companions will become mostly useless once I hit 50.

Flashpoints

The dungeons have been fun and challenging. My friends and I like to do dungeons together for the first time without reading up on bosses so we can figure them out on our own. We have really enjoyed this in SWTOR. I like the variety of dungeons and the loot drops seemed appropriate for the dungeons we were in.

The reason you're not getting any replies or views is because it's not negative and bashing the hell outa the game. -_- This tells you how intelligent our forums are.

Not really. I read the OP's whole post and for the most part agree with his points on the game. Except the Open World PVP. I donot want any Open World PVP on any PVE server I play. On PVP servers, fine..go for it..I could'nt care less. I still play WoW ( 7+ years ) and for the most part any Open World PVP experences I had sucked as a whole. I can remmember the time I was trying to track down a Undead Mage who was in Darnassus and to my bewilderment....I could'nt use "track Undead" They are mostly undead...but are treated a humanoids. :p This type of inconsistency is rampart in WoW when it comes to PVP. And let's not mention the times they caused headaches for other players by killing quest , flight and vendor npc's.

Good post but I disagree a bit about the world PVP part.

To me world PvP tends to be world ganking. PvP at its best outside of WZ is when opposite factions agree to meet and PvP - see Hillsbrand in the old WoW days. In other words it is player driven.

Now Bioware provided Ilum with that in mind but because there were no rewards people wouldn't partake, so much for people wanting world PvP.

Bioware introduce rewards and hey presto people kill trade, so much for world PvP

The next Ilum disaster is Bioware bug the rewards and the dominant side simply camp the smaller one to cash in, so much for world PvP.

It appears to me that the 'modern' gamer does not want world PvP, if they did they would do it instead of bleating about it.

I believe that Bioware should forget about world PvP and concentrate on WZ/rated WZ and possibly an arena - maybe a great hunt type last man/team standing type where a number of teams of 3/4 people enter an arena and fight until only one team remains - although again I suspect PvPers would try to cheat it by getting multiple teams into the one game (off peak) and win trade.

Now I'm not suggesting that all, or even many PVPers would do this but as always the minority spoil it for the majority.

/signed - I share almost all your opinions, particularly about how fun the story&PvP are and how "meh" crafting has been.

My only wishes are that the new WZ that's coming out wasn't cross-faction (I rolled Republic specifically to kill Imps, not to fight alongside them) and that players had the ability to veto one of the Warzones and remove it from their map pool (so people that only get huttball can stop whining).

But they were laid out nicely, so it was a good read

I also agree with the open pvp. If any of you play Warhammer Online, then I'd love to have that kind of a set-up here (having a contested open pvp zone next to a certain questing area every 10 levels or so and fight over a keep or like in Ilum, rather than having to wait for level 50)

I understand your point of view on World PvP. I think having separate PvP and PvE servers is a must. My issue is that it seemed pointless to have a PvP server if you never see the other faction. I am probably and oddball when it comes to liking world PvP. I just enjoy the anything can happen aspect of it.

I agree about the no trolling = unpopular post, but that's okay. I wanted the other silent love this game peeps to know they are not alone.

Agree 100% on the world PVP and crafting.

I had the exact same thought about PVP while leveling (STV in wow was a zone where you felt insecure because you knew you could get ganked anytime)

Honestly, i don't even know why there is PvP and PvE servers. i always lvl in MMO in PvP servers because i like the thrill of it. Im lvl 42 now and never felt any thrill while lvling in this game!!!
