RolyartNala
This thread got me thinking, so I did a little experiment of my own. SWTOR runs hot on my brand-new gaming laptop (2.9GHz i7, 8GB RAM, GeForce GT 555). Really hot. Like "Man, should I shut this thing off?" hot. Even on rock bottom settings, the game worries me with the heat it produces on my rig. Worse, even on low graphics settings, I'm still only getting 15-25 frames per second (with all that heat). So, as an experiment, I downloaded and installed Rift, which is a gorgeous MMO with graphics that actually go hi-res (unlike SWTOR, in which hi-res is currently disabled except in cutscenes). Running Rift on high settings on my laptop, I was surprised to discover that I had 25-35 fps consistently with very little heat. On high graphics settings. What the heck is up with SWTOR's game engine? And I hear it doesn't even support DX11? Edited February 28, 2012 by RolyartNala
SuperomegaOP
its not the engine per say... its just that they pretty much stocked the hero engine with bioware seal of approval steroids, and its since its so different from what the actual engine, somethings that would usually work, cant/dont work with this bioware hybrid hero engine Edited February 28, 2012 by SuperomegaOP

What the heck is up with SWTOR's game engine? And I hear it doesn't even support DX11? What's wrong with the graphics engine? Simple answer, the engine is crap... They really messed up when they chose to make the game using this engine, i know people that have $5000 dollar PC's and this game runs like crap on it, and they can play games like crysis 2 on ultra settings, across 3 monitors, BF3, all that crap you name it, they get hundreds of fps on those games, they launch swtor, get like 20 fps, epic fail. LordSkyKnight
The engine is crap, that is all there is to it. I was running Esseles today on my new alt and I kept crashing to desktop in every other room and it would crash my internet connection as well. I gave up playing for the night because of this. Strangely i have no connection issues now that I am off of the game. Edited February 28, 2012 by LordSkyKnight
Cerion
you couldn't post this in one of the half dozen other engine threads? thought you needed your own spotlight did you?

Dystopic
Why does it matter either way, hoss? Do you work here? He's a fanboi. Less threads about the issue make the issue look smaller. They can probably make this engine work well for them. Pretty sure wow still uses a modified WC3 engine. But it's not going to happen overnight. Edited February 28, 2012 by Dystopic
RobNightfall
Essentially, as other people have said, the graphics engine s**ks. They did lots of things wrong with it and need to re-code it, which will not happen very quickly, if at all. Maybe not but I think you would be rather surprised how old this engine is, I did a little searching and I found stuff about hero engine and hero's journey that dates back almost to the start date of wow. Just look how long it took them to even make the engine stable for release heh. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-BYYCCa2DS8 Edited February 28, 2012 by LordSkyKnight
