Customizable Gear - Color Schematics

This is the first thread I've ever posted so feel free to criticize.

I've been thinking lately about how many MMO's don't offer the ability to change the color scheme of personal gear. The only MMO I'm even aware of allowing this is Guild Wars. Though I am not trying to say I would like for the game to take a more Guild Wars approach as far as customization, I am curious about how some people would feel about being able to change gear color for players, to add a more unique approach to the game.

Being able to change gear to colors like RED, BLUE, GREEN, YELLOW, or evenPINK would add a new level of uniqueness to an already unique game.

It would also be cool to see this work even for guilds, having the ability to share a common color amongst ranking officials in the guild or for all players in the guild overall. I'm sure many other players would like something like this but I am very curious as to who, in general, would want something like this done. Please give feedback on what you guys think about this.

Ultima Online used to allow the player to change the color of their gear as well. It was a great feature in my opinion because, like you mentioned, it added a whole new level of personalization and kept everyone from looking exactly alike....or a giant clone army running around (or it worked to help make you look like a giant clone army if that was your idea of fun.)

Either way it's one of the things I look back on and miss from the old days of Ultima, I wish it would make a comeback however I'm not sure how much of a strain that would put on the game trying to render say, the imperial fleet, with all the models and then individual color palettes. I suspect the reasoning has to do with something along those lines as to why it's not available. I wold suspect though adding even a basic color palette of say 8 customizable colors wouldn't hurt that much and could be implemented fairly easily...it would certainly lesson the odds of seeing someone wearing what I was wearing :)

Yeah I know what you mean man, im not sure how hard it would be for them to add this feature into the game but if they make it usable like an item enchantment is in wow then I don't see how it could be very tough. I just know that was one things hated in wow was seeing around 10 characters in the same area that you're in, wearing the same exact gear that you have, I mean where's the variety and uniqueness in that? I mean yeah, I would understand keeping the same color concepts in troopers if they where all clones and where meant to look alike, but this is before that time when ordinary men and woman technically signed up to fight.

Rift uses a dye system. Crafters (Apothercary) can make dyes of various colors or you can purchase the standard colors at a vendor.

I would definately like to see some type of system patched to TOR that would allow us to personalize our gear. I'm sick of wearing brown. Every upgrade looks almost exactly the same and is always brown.

I would love to see a recolour kit in SWTOR.

I spent a happy half-hour in LotRO yesterday creating a new outfit and dying clothes and armour to create a new Spring look. It had been a while since I'd logged in and I was immediately struck by how colourful the world is there.

I would also like to see far more craftable casual clothing in SWTOR that could also be recloured.

Yes it would be nice to customize the kit. In GW the illusive black dye drops where part of the game play heritage. Black being the most expensive dye to buy and looked so great to wear. When questing and a black dye dropped it was an awesome feeling. Not only for the colour but also for the resale value to other gamers. Added a new element to game apart from questing. So yes some kinda kit colour system would be great.

  • 2 weeks later...
Well It looks like Bioware has came to the same conclusion as the rest of us and is adding a color customization in their new 1.2 patch which is coming out this april. lets hope it will be something to look forward to and not a spin off. Please Bioware do not **** us on this. haha

Picking any color for our gear would be great, can't imagine why someone would be against it.. but I think the system in 1.2 is just "match to chest piece" or "show original color".

I liked the dye system in LotRO and the customization in Star Trek Online is awesome.

As someone who has been hunting a white robe for my Jedi Knight the last few weeks id say a big time yes to this. I found one that I immediately had to replace after getting a better modable piece :( I wish I could have kept the look of the robe I love while upgrading my armor. I haven't even begun to obsess over my weapon color just using the traditional Jedi ones but for petes sake I don't understand why its so hard to find robes that arent turd looking :(

You didn't know? True ******es only care about these colors: PURPLE and ORANGE. Your gear should never be any other color.

/thread

i know this is a older post im replying to but......

we are talking about visual armor colors, not the type, artifact, prototype, custom slot ....sheesh.

and i thought the guilds will get a guild patch emblem thing for members. also they can create a guild banner...? maybe not in 1.2 but i know i heard it in the guild summit live feed.

also isnt the color system coming in 1.2 tied into your chest piece? IE: if your chest piece has green stripes or patches, you can match the rest of the gear set to that color? so as far as i understood we crafters wont be able to pick the colors am i correct or off track? i suppose i could go look it up........

i would rally love to have to track down dyes to craft certain colors for armors. does anyone have a link to some kind of notes about crafting in 1.2?

edit: i forgot to mention, i see people mention various game and the craft/color mechanics therein, i played a f2p/p2w game not too long ago called, Uncharted Waters.

yes THAT uncharted waters from the old snes days, was is a asian mmorpg. well in that game crafting was similar to this one, as you collected items to craft, and then you had 100% success and a chance for good or great successes, but you would get a item of a certain color scheme, well they sold dyed or dyed dropped, and you applied and whammo neat colors. not too custom but enough to be able to be unique to a point. in this game here SWTOR, i still cant see why we cant do the color dye thing, cripes in my ship theres a booth i can stand in already why not code it to be a paint booth....? walk in hit button choose color and pssssshhhhhhhh a quick spray and a quick animation of a spray head robot thing and viola, custom paint. single color of course. but we could have metallic or gloss or matte, prety much like the paint booths in GTA games, or like how you customize a car in need for speed games. theres my two cents.....

For the Commando above like myself I actually have an AWESOME Camo colored gun *Looks exactly like the Vorlon ships from Babylon 5 except Dark green and black* and, I would love to MATCH TO THAT.. please make that change it's simple *in theory*... also make it so if we unequip the item the and have the option to make the color stay.. because even though it's the best looking assault cannon in the game in my opinion it's only a lvl 39.. granted tier 2 Legendary purple 39 but still a 39 lol

For those of you curious it's the T-120 Endowment Assault Cannon it also makes the best A.C. sound *IMHO* ...

So yes BioWare if someone reads these.. please make color match to ANY PIECE and allow us to persist that color if we remove the item. This would make so many people happy

MMO's need to wake up and realize that being able to express yourself in a virtual world you visit and play in every day is extraordinarily important.

Frankly, Bioware's presentation where this was concerned is abysmal. Their character creator was pathetic and their armor selection is horrible. There is no barber and its ridiculous.

They took the old system out and instead of taking the opportunity to give us a real chance at some customization, they decided that deciding what pieces of armor to match to whatever color chestpiece we have on is all we need.

Frankly, I'm offended. This game is great and it's player base is great. Bioware, your record shows you are capable of so much more, please don't ignore the obvious and give us more personalizing choices and control over how we look.

I asked nicely in Fleet local if people would add onto this thread and give it some weight and the trolls came out "You should be happy with what they are giving us... go back to WoW.. rabble rabble... "

They should rename fleet *Troll Haven* :p

They're not adding it, they're re-enabling it. The color-matching system has been in game since at least last year (in beta), but they disabled it because it wasn't quite working properly and they needed to tweak it.

And for the record, it's not a customization system, its as I said above, a color-matching system. You can't permanently re-color anything, it's a checkbox option to allow you to choose to match other pieces of armor to your chestpiece's color scheme, but only while you're wearing them.

Then giving us one or two color-selector drop-downs next to the Chestpiece in the "Customize" tab would solve everything. We could select primary and secondary colors of the Chestpiece, then match all other pieces to it using the existing interface.

Bully!
