cbantug
The wireless card that came with my computer is pretty bad. I get frequent latency spikes from the connection going weak. This happens maybe 30-40 times a day. While not game breaking, it's an annoyance. I can't connect with a wire due to where my computer is vs where the router is. Now I don't know a thing about what I should look for when making a buying decision. So I'm here looking for advice. Do I have to meet a certain compatibility? How do I know which is best for me? Can I possibly get a nice wireless card to fix my problems for less than $100? Any help would greatly be appreciated. I want to hopefully be able to go to best buy or wal Mart tomorrow on my day off and get one.
CyTrek
linksys AE2500 is a nice usb style card, with good range and dual band N w/ gigabyte data rating . About $40-$45 depending on where you buy it. If you buy a usb extender cable and get it up high you should have superb signal quality.
cbantug
Oh thanks for the quick response! First let me say, I didnt even know they came in a USB! I'm used to the giant chip with the antenna sticking out of the back. So that's interesting, is there any drawback to using a USB over one you manually have to install internally? Also, how much is that extender cable? That's awesome to hear that I may very well come under budget!
JerokTalram
The USB adaptor should be fine. USB 2.0 is plenty fast enough to handle 802.11N transfer speeds. As for an extention cable Best Buy sells a 3ft for $4.99 and a 6ft for $5.99. Since Best Buy's markup is very high on cables, you should be able to find them for less. cbantug
I wouldn't if I didn't have to. My wireless router is down below me, and my computer is too far to reach it. Plus I can't drill a hole through my floor. In the end this is the cheaper route for me.
