People here used to say that GW2 was a joke for not having official forums

After a month of reading through the CONSTANT and BELLIGERENT whining here, I've come to the conclusion that Arenanet made an absolutely brilliant move by passing on official forums for GW1/GW2. Having a customer support forum is all that's necessary, and ends up creating a healthier game/community imho. Edited by Goldenstar

Warhammer also did not have official forums (at least not at launch) and that did nothing for the community. The game itself is what shapes the tone and tenor of its community, not the existence of 'official' forums.

i can see where the op is coming from, and to an extent i can agree. considering that the game will have no significant pve, and the pvp will be primarily pick up and play there isnt a whole lot of need for them in the first place. also limiting the whole whining thing seems to be nothing but a plus.

To say the OP is wrong, I'd like to see where your experience lies.

I don't think you are necessarily wrong. But I will say how SWTOR has run their forums was terrible. They have no idea how to keep people happy and also for a while had all the complaints running free in GD for a while.

The mods here simply need to be more aggressive banning people that have a history of posting negative comments with no constructive purpose and do so over and over and over.

You mean you want the company to hide the fact the people are unhappy with their product?

No, I'd like the company to not have to deal with the same teenagers who come onto the forums and scream every time they fail to instagib someone in a WZ =D

How many people are happy with your country? how many happy with your country economics? how many happy with payment.. i can keep asking this question, and u will always find whiners and whiners nonstop....

and u expect, every single players swtor will be happy?

then news for you: in gw2 and titan... you guyz will be big time disappointed and heart broken...

Any particular reason why? GW1 was great, and from what I've played at conventions GW2 will be even better.

I think the point is MMO players seem to over hype that which is not released yet and once released it does not live up to their expectations.

The Arenanet developers post often on the GW2 Guru community site, which in general seems quite friendly and civilized. I must say that they seem much better than our forums here :( and they also seem to have a good community going. Let's see how long that lasts...

This^ x 1,000. Enough is enough. Constructive commentary is constructive. Childish tantrum blather is an entirely different, useless and DAMAGING thing.

As stated elsewhere:

Rob Pardo says that if he had to do it all over again, he would not have public forums.

Public, as in viewable to non-subscribers?

Incomplate paraphrase begs for exposition.

I totally agree.

These forums have been the vehicle for a wave of haters to thrive and that has hidden most of the constructive feedback.

the same would undoubtly happen to GW2 if anet had forums, and the fan forums are actually quite strict and will ban you on sight if you atempt to say anything that isnt constructive. A privilige that game companies dont have because people will then come and whine at them about freedom of speech and hurt their image. Anet really was the smartest.

This is too much generalisation.

"Some MMO players", its hardly the majority.

a public forum can convolute things alot...thats why the empire will always defeat the republic except for in the movies..mwuahahahaha j/k

we will have to wait and see how guild wars 2 is when it comes out...but if its anything like guild wars 1 (should be eons better) then its going to be great fun for the pvpers (and given the changes ought to be excellent for the PVE crowd aswell)

Has lasted pretty well for the 7 years of GW1, hopefully GWGuru's strict moderation will keep it that way when GW2 gets closer to launch

high school didn't have official forums and that was still terrible.

I suppose it's easier for Guild Wars, at least the first one, that there were only 20 levels and numbers didn't get stupidly large. But the primary reason I believe, is that Guild Wars had equal gear, but you could still customize what stats and effects a weapon or piece of armor would have.

I think 50 PvP would be far more fun if everyone had the same stats, and as an effect, there wouldn't be expertise gear as rewards. And thus would end a large part of the forum whining.

All valid points that I completely agree with, not sure what it has to do with a discussion on the impact of official forums though =P

I kind of agree with OP, MMO forums have been pretty bad for a good while now, particularly in the year or so post-release. I've often wondered if it wouldn't be better for them just not to exist, they are potentially a deterrent to new customers (even forums in established games, years old are unlikely to draw in new players) and basically serve as a venue for complaining and ranting.

Still, now and then there is a worthwhile post buried in the heaps of steaming ****. The question is whether those rare quality posts outweigh the mountains of rage and ***** tossing.
