celebrei Posted February 15, 2012 Posted February 15, 2012 Wherein they could've spend those hundreds of millions of dollars on polishing gameplay instead, seriously, the voice acting is good as far as the class story goes but the sidequests dialogue I just tend to skip by pressing spacebar rapidly, esp. those with alien language voices. BW didn't have to fully voiced every quest, it would have saved time and money if most of the boring sidequests were just text and no voices, the extra budget could've gone to better aesthetic designs like equipments and such. I'm rapidly losing my interest in this game, My Jedi Guardian looks like crap on pvp armors and I pvp all day for weeks and I'm still only Valor 36 while the Ilum Imp. Exploiters reach Valor 60+ in a couple of hours and got away with it!
OmegaMayhem Posted February 15, 2012 Posted February 15, 2012 Please post your proof of how much they spent on each aspect of the game.
Inarai Posted February 15, 2012 Posted February 15, 2012 No game development budget went into VO. They got extra money exclusively for VO that they would never have had at all if they weren't doing VO.
plutorix Posted February 15, 2012 Posted February 15, 2012 I'm wondering how much the Star Wars franchise cost, I'm sure that wasn't cheap too. But so far gameplay isn't bad for me, nothing stopped my leveling experience and no game crash. That's already lighyears better than other games I've gotten this year. And most MMO I've dealt with. One game I got took from November to January to release a fix for a bug in the career mode of the game. Until then no one could progress past a level. That is a real game killer and it wasn't as complex as this game.
uidLucid Posted February 15, 2012 Posted February 15, 2012 Please post your proof of how much they spent on each aspect of the game. That.
bicuspid Posted February 15, 2012 Posted February 15, 2012 yeah then they got the warhammer pvp guys from their shantytown under the bridge to do the pvp for this game on the cheap
Inarai Posted February 15, 2012 Posted February 15, 2012 I'm wondering how much the Star Wars franchise cost, I'm sure that wasn't cheap too. Between the fact that LucasArts is an active partner in the game, and the fact that much of the licensing is probably in terms of a portion of the profits of subscriptions... I think you might be overestimating that.
notebene Posted February 15, 2012 Posted February 15, 2012 So your angry about valor exploiters. Why not post a "I hate exploiters" post? There are 73,245 posts about precisely how much money was spent on voice acting. Doesn't seem like a great lead-in story for your complaint. Maybe "Oh my God! I just saw a leprechaun hanging out with a pot of gold!", then "Seriously, I hate exploiters." There is voice acting in the game. Money was spent on it. There's an accounting term (I saved it for the end, because I didn't want to scare anyone ) called 'sunk cost'. It's gone, now let's all move forward, report bugs, ask them to fix things, yada yada yada.

I think you might be overestimating that. Well it looks like monthly upkeep for this game is probably around $7.5 million a month when you consider their 500k to be profitable comments. Compare that to WOW's approx $4.5-$5 million for a much larger game and I think you can extrapolate that LA is getting paid handsomely.
SixLombardi Posted February 15, 2012 Posted February 15, 2012 4th pillar (Story), was promised. Without voice acting how can they say they accomplished theirs goal?
celebrei Posted February 15, 2012 Author Posted February 15, 2012 You would think that a game that has a production budget of hundreds of millions of dollars would at least have something as simple as a chat bubble option.

That does, of course, include VO, art resources of a higher technical quality... There's a few reasons for higher costs.
MMOTotal Posted February 15, 2012 Posted February 15, 2012 Yes, VO was the selling point. Most of it was a waste, class quests were cool
Inarai Posted February 15, 2012 Posted February 15, 2012 Yes, VO was the selling point. Most of it was a waste, class quests were cool Oh, come on - the VO is great.
Chromiie Posted February 15, 2012 Posted February 15, 2012 Really only class quests should have been voiced because clearly the game has suffered in all other aspects.
Zhit Posted February 15, 2012 Posted February 15, 2012 Yes, most of the development money went into the VO--and isn't TOR the best game every made!
Emeda Posted February 15, 2012 Posted February 15, 2012 Oh, come on - the VO is great. Yes everyone loves the droid on the ship. Never get tired of his VO. I spend 1 hour a day just running back and forth on the ship just to hear the wonderful VO.
kufa Posted February 15, 2012 Posted February 15, 2012 Having VO and cutscenes on all quests was quite overkill. The story quests would have felt more special without every single quest having it. It would also have been much, much cheaper to add content (which of course would have given us more content and features).
Inarai Posted February 15, 2012 Posted February 15, 2012 Yes, most of the development money went into the VO--and isn't TOR the best game every made! Faaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaalse. VO money wouldn't have gone into other areas - if they didn't do the VO, they'd never have gotten that money.
ptwonline Posted February 15, 2012 Posted February 15, 2012 Really only class quests should have been voiced because clearly the game has suffered in all other aspects. I disagree. Only voicing class quests would make the rest too jarring and break the immersion. However, I think they should have had more class quests and fewer garbage world quests. Main world quest chains are fine, but some of the extra stuff is pretty pointless. "Hi! I'm a pointless NPC who you will never see again who needs a competely tangental task done. Can you do it for me?"
ArtMonster Posted February 15, 2012 Posted February 15, 2012 I think they should jsut get rid of textures alltogether...its a waste of money. Make all the polygons the default grayscale with no graphic overlays. That would fix everything.
Vicen Posted February 15, 2012 Posted February 15, 2012 4th pillar (Story), was promised. Without voice acting how can they say they accomplished theirs goal? The game would be cheesy and heck if there was no voice acting...So what this guy is saying is right on the $$$$$$
Matteis Posted February 15, 2012 Posted February 15, 2012 (edited) Too bad they didn't put more money (or thought tbh) into the world/galaxy/space design. Or put more money or thought into getting a better game engine that didn't need load screens every thirty seconds. Load screens and the segregated feel will ultimately kill this game. No one wants a lobbied multiplayer MMO - there's a non-p2p solution for that called Crap Wars I mean Guild Wars. Most people want a persistent MMO world where you don't get disconnected from your avatar all the time while traveling. Airlocks, orbital stations, elevators, planetary load screens. Blegh. Sure there are other systems in the game that may drive people away in terms of its rules (PvP mainly), but core design blunders like what I'm referring to that can't be changed will take its toll in the end I think. SWTOR quests are so much more interesting and immersive than the boring/repetitive WoW quests. Quit WoW 3 years ago, never had the urge to go back since. Definitely sticking with SWTOR.
