Cordonus
My main is a juggernaut but I've been playing a trooper in my downtime. I only have 2 complaints so far 1) I chose commando ... I'm not really enjoying it that much but my big issue is that in choosing commando, my first companion, Aric is a commando, my second companion Elara seems to be a commando in the healing tree. I really wish I had chosen vanguard instead to flesh out the team. My own fault I guess... sighs... 2) I am debating deleting this character as I am very very bored of the story. I was expecting character development and responses similar to how the characters were handled in halo 3: ODST. Instead I seem to be a yes sir, no sir type of trooper. I haven't said anything remotely funny, I don't care about the idiot dark general sending me to Taris... I was hoping to shout excitedly or out of breath at people to take cover, to have awesome battle situations...give me the feeling of a soldier and I just don't feel it I'm currently on Taris and have one last class quest to do, so does this story get any better? Jenel
Yeah, you go hunting for your former squad. And then actively start building your squad rahter than just picking them up as you encounter them along your story. All the Trooper companions are Troopers themselves, Arics default is the Assault Cannon, Elara uses a Pistol, which while she is a primary healer, she doesn't really come off as a Commando. M1-4X is supposedly your Ranged Tank, he's a huge robot with probably one of the most awesome personalities in game. If you are offered any customisable Droid parts from Heroic missions and there's nothing else better to take then grab them so that you can upgrade him fully when you get him. When I say that he's "supposedly" the Ranged Tank, it's because he has a cable pull which pulls the mob into melee, however this can be disabled. His Customisation options are fantastic too, he just keeps getting bigger and meaner looking. Your next companion is Tanno Vik who is supposedly the Demolitions expert. This is the bad boy of your group, he's a Melee Tank using a Techblade which a lot of players have complained about, but soldiers using Vibroswords and techblades seems to be pretty common amongst NPC's so I'm ok with it. Lastly is Yuun, who is your Tech Expert, he uses a techstave and is your Melee DPS, I've not actually gotten him yet but am in the process of getting him. All in all, the group is nicely balanced, from uptight, by the book Elara to plays by his own rules Vik. Nicely rounded off with the irrepressible M1-4X. And to be honest, most companion setups have all sorts of different classes wearing different types of armor. The Trooper group feels and looks like a proper squad of team mates. Especially when you have them in the white trooper armor with a different colour scheme for each.

They aren't actually troopers, although they all use aim as their primary stat. If you have some armor which requires "Trooper" as a class to wear it, you cannot equip it on a companion, only on yourself.
badatt
1. It does suck that each team member is the similar but it makes the equiping of the characters easier because you just hand them down the line when better gear pops up. 2. The story sucks IMO. I cannot stand Garza. After the first chapter it goes downhill from there. Other classes have WAY better stories. That being said, I still LOVE my Commando. Ngamok
Act 2 was actually fun and when you go board the ship with the super weapon, your ENTIRE team is there with you in the initial fight. I am part way into Act 3 atm on Voss.
AutoCocker
Act 2 was actually fun and when you go board the ship with the super weapon, your ENTIRE team is there with you in the initial fight. I am part way into Act 3 atm on Voss. I found the trooper story just to be ok. Granted this was coming from doing the bh and agent story. However i will say this the battle quoted above was an omg moment for sure. Edited February 15, 2012 by AutoCocker
TheLoneSage
I do feel that the Story was a let down. I was expecting something with the character-depth, something similar to Star Wars Republic Commando. As those, were a great example of True troopers with character and a story. I felt that they went the wrong way with it. For a Special Operations Squad, it feels pretty lonely out there in the Galaxy. Even though you have a companion, it's still a Lone-Wolf styled story line. I miss the feel of being apart of a team: http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-L7Cm_gtZmKI/Ta7AsJxI1mI/AAAAAAAAAR0/qUEqZeAT8fY/s1600/Star-Wars-Republic-Commando-1354.jpg Edited February 16, 2012 by TheLoneSage
Taliefer
frankly, none of the stories are that good imo. they are all pretty bland and lack character devolpment. at least sith warrior, jedi knight, bounty hunter and trooper do. i cant imagine id be blown away by any of the stories at this point. if any of these stories were in a single player game, theyd all be crapped on pretty heavily. its just that its an MMO, so they figured people would be happy with bland stories since "omg mmo with a story, never been done!" meh. obviously im disapointed with all the stories
SimplyKupo
That sucks you don't like it but I would go ahead and try leveling another toon for a bit if you're unhappy. Perhaps you would enjoy one of the other storylines more. I thought there were some funny options during the convos but I guess that'd just be opinion. You can always come back after a bit and keep leveling this one or make a new one and go vanguard. I personally love the trooper story. It makes sense there's similarity, we're a spec op squad. =) But they do all have different roles and you can pick which one you want that best complements your play style so imo it gets better. I have even used the free respec option twice now just so I could run around with a different companion. My fav is to be assault specialist with Elara though. -Torch-
In my opinion the story is one big down hill slope. Act 1 is cool and fun, act 2 starts out kind of cool, then slowly goes down. Act 3 is horrible. Personally, I enjoy playing the loyal soldier type, however I hate the fact I have a whole squad, and I can only bring one of them on an op. The best mission is by far when you got to bring them all along with you. Edited February 16, 2012 by -Torch-
zElmTree
If you want funny, cool, never boring, has a flirt option in almost every conversation with opposite gender roll a smuggler...i personally loved the story imo
Cordonus
Thanks for all the replies. To answer a few points 1) The trooper isn't my main, I do have another class I play and enjoy (a sith warrior), but I had high hopes for the trooper...not anymore 2) I'll acknowledge it makes sense that the squad would all be similar armour etc...that they are all soldiers..and yet...I'm very disappointed by that. I went in not knowing much about the trooper story line, but I did know I would get a former imperial. I had hoped that meant I would get a former imperial agent so I could have either a sniper or a stealthy scout..instead I get Elara... Basically I feel I could have setup a recruitment desk, and taken 4 or 5 random commandos and saved myself the trouble of running around and recruiting for the squad. 3) Whoever said Repulic Commando did a better job, I have to agree. Yes they were still all troopers but I got the sense they were more specialized and individual then the group of commando's I've got so far. 4) I really really wanted some individuality in my responses. But I played again last night, saluted no less then 3 people, and basically speak very formally. I wanted to be sarcastic and even darkside I find my character just sounds annoyed or speaks even more formally, just firmer. 5) A new question, where the hell does my magic blaster come from for cutscenes? I'm going to be fair and finish of Taris...but if this doesn't change, this is one trooper whose resigning. Oh well...back to the empire I guess. Buckit
Trooper game play is fantastic and most of the companions are quite useful. The story is really dull and repetitive. I couldn't write my way out of a paper bag and I could have made a more interesting Trooper story. Another indication that Bioware focused way more attention on the Empire side. Says you, at least you guys don't get anyone like Skadge forced onto you. I'll take a boring story over stuff like being forced to bring along Gault and Skadge, if only because of how my Bounty Hunter operates.
SimplyKupo
Thanks for all the replies. To answer a few points... Well I'm glad you gave it a shot at least. I'm sorry you don't enjoy it but I guess that's another good thing about having the different classes/stories to choose from. It sounds like you would love the 4th companion, he's probably like the kind of character you want yours to be. I dunno if you were in the military or not, but if not perhaps that's why I enjoy the story so much... the dumb bs that happens is pretty accurate, lol. If you were/are, well... poop, I've got nothing. XD I can totally see where you're coming from though. If I wanted my character to have a personality that the social options didn't allow me to have, I would probably not like it either. Luckily, I can make the character exactly how I imagined her, so that's probably why I really enjoy the story with her so much. Thanks for not being all flamey trolly about it though. =) Also to some one else who mentioned smuggler, that is the only toon I made a guy because it seems so fitting and I can't wait to have him spread his space warts to every woman he meets. MUAHAHAHAHAHAAA! <_< Edited February 16, 2012 by SimplyKupo

I don't think Trooper is necessarily bad, just not what I was looking for unfortunately. To answer your question though, nope, never been in the military in the RL. Small units operating independently. And anyway, you couldn't have a whole squad running around for missions, it would totally throw off what balance there is in this game.
