Am I raising companion affection too slowly?

I am a level 37 Sage. I have raised Qyzen's affection by trying to pick the right conversation choices (but not going extremely out of my way for it) and buying him the right kind of gifts when I have a bit of spare credits or I get one from a Diplomacy mission. I recently got him to a little above 3000, and he gave me a mission to go to his father's tomb in Tattooine.

The mission is level 30, gray for me now. Apparently the game thinks I should have got to this point a bunch of levels sooner.

So, what am I doing wrong? Should I spend way more credits on gifts? Keep escaping and repeating conversations to maximize affection gains? Or is there a third way of gaining affection that I am completely overlooking?

Thanks in advance.

You shouldn't worry about the affection level of your companion, it just makes them finish crew skills slightly faster and that's pretty much it.

That's not all of it as it is also one of the things that affects if your companion will give you quests to do or not.

No OP, you are not doing anything wrong. A little more slowly than expected perhas, but not wrong.

I have the opposite problem - I tend to over-level my companion affection, so I get missions that are higher level than I am.

If you want to bump his affection a bit (or a lot), run the Esselles flashpoint a few times. It is repeatable with no lockout timer, you can solo it from about level 21 onwards, and it will net you up to about 400 affection points, if you know what conversation options to take.

As a Trooper, I kept Elara out and maximized her affection, and then went back and raised others. Aric Jorgan is my companion that gives me extra missions and I did those when I was way over level from them.

You could give them gifts, which to maximize all of their affection, you will have to unless you want to run The Esseles repeatedly to do it.

If you are curious about which gifts go well with each companion, check out the guide in my signature.

As a level 34 Bounty Hunter Mako's affection is around 4500 or more. But I buy her gifts because most of the time she really hates my choices. However 3000 at 37 does seem a bit low. Also companions tend to fail at the higher level gathering missions if they have low affection.

I'm 34 on my Consular and I have Qyzen at 3500 and thats just now completing Chapter 1, think I've given him a handful of gifts.

I oddly got the quest to go to Tatooine when I was questing in Tatooine. This definitely didn't happen on my first Consular. :p Who didn't get it until I was like on Alderaan I believe.

I'd say around 3000~ is average for not really trying to boost him up and using him for questing. Occasional gift or just the +15 from saying stuff he likes during questing would put you at that point.

But anyways, as far as companion quests. Expect them all to backtrack to old places. A lot of the quests get held up by story points sometimes, so you usually will see you having to travel back to a planet you were at 2 planets ago. But it really has no affect on you overall other then how far you get on your companions story and a marginal boost in crew skills.

I can't seem to ever figure out the right choice for Tharan Cedrax, and I haven't ever bought him gifts either. I probably should though, because I am level 43 and his affection is maybe 2000.... yeah... he hates me. :)

You can check out the guide that Ohnoto linked a few posts above - awesome guide by the way! From memory I am fairly sure he loves luxury items, likes technology, and is somewhat ok with courting items.

As for conversation choices: if the convo involves technology, any option that means asking details about that technology will get you points with him.

Yeah, 3000 at level 37 does seem a bit low. After I got my second companion (Kira) I used her predominately until I finished my class quest and capped her at that time. The only time I didn't have Kira out was when I needed to kill an elite/champion.

Now Lord Scourge ... /facepalm. When finishing my class quest, I got a -1400ish affection point hit. He hates me :p

I've played Empire since the game launched, only just started a Republic side character... how do you Solo Esseles

Not to give away too much, but there's that giant robot (ISS-7) where you have to click control panels on two different sides of the area ... how do you do that solo? Does clicking the panels actually do anything?

And only the starting companions can be farmed this way, correct? (T7 droid for knight, Qyzen for Consular, Corso for Smuggler, Aric for Trooper)

What you mention inside the spoiler tag only makes an extra boss appear, but it is not needed to complete the flashpoint.

Good question about only starting companions... If it gives affection for any of the others, it is not very well documented. Maybe I'll try tonight :)

I just did Esseles with Zenith and gained 0 affection. I will admit I did not try every possible conversation choice, but I am fairly sure I picked some that he should like. It certainly appears that only the starting companions have affection gains. Still, a very good resource for that.
