Disappointed by SWTOR

I'm only up to level 30 on my Shadow (tank spec) and I already feel like this game isn't quite what I was hoping it would be. I also have a 25ish Operative. I'll keep playing, at least for the story and the lack of a decent alternative MMO.

My biggest gripe is that lightsabers feel like the beat sticks from Futurama. In that show, the main characters encounter the police who proceed to pull out lightsabers. When they actually hit the characters, it is nothing worse than a baton. In the movies, if you got hit by a lightsaber, you lost a limb or got cut in half. I know that for the sake of game balance, lightsabers can't one-shot everyone. It just feels like I'm using the Futurama beat sticks when I fight tough enemies, though. I think it takes away from the Star Wars feel of the game too much.

The other issue I have is the feeling of the game being just like <insert popular MMO here>. I haven't played <popular MMO> for at least four years, but the main theory behind the game that I hated was "bigger numbers = more fun". Bigger health (for enemies and you) numbers, damage (enemies and you again), and gear stats formed the basis for end-game content. From what I have seen of the group-based content up to 30, SWTOR seems to be following the same formula. I would have rather seen more complex (strategic) fights than simply giving enemies more HP and damage, requiring players to obtain more stats before challenging harder foes. City of Heroes did an excellent job of avoiding the "bigger numbers = more fun" game formula.

So, does the game get better as you get closer to 50? Does the repetitive feeling of the game fade a bit after leveling? Is the group content more complex than simply needing better gear stats to challenge it?

Before you ask, no, I don't plan on going back to CoH anytime soon. It was fun, but they were very slow at developing content and they were taking the game away from the small group experience that I enjoyed.

in before fanboys tearing op to bits!

but seriously, while i'm still enjoying the game i can understand where you are coming from.

from what i've heard the game does not get much better later on. but i'll let other people who are end game tell you for themselves

but beware on the forums. SWTOR has one of the worst forum communities i've ever seen

So, to touch on the lightsaber part...

How would you implement lightsabers, have them authentic to how the movies portrayed them, and still keep from immediately killing pretty much ANYTHING that doesn't use them in one swipe?

If we did authentically follow their abilities, we'd see pretty much the entire game population a force-user and then we'd be literally swimming in mobs because of the speed in which we'd be cutting them down.

It's called foregoing 'lore' in the sake of balancing gameplay. Much in the way that in a lot of shooter-based games how you can be shot several times in the face before dying...

Even the fanboi's are dwindling to flame on this post, so OP, you're safe for now.

The game isn't good. Its WoW but with less quantity and less quality.

I started playing EVE again and its reminding me of what a game made with passion is like to play.....will stay on EVE until DUST514 MMOFPS comes out.

By passions, you mean creating an uninstaller that literally breaks your OS....or by implenting 'cosmetic' items to a store that become required to buy.....or buy having your own Developers boost their Corps while totally dismantling others?

Right...

Look, TOR isn't anything really revolutionary, but it's far from a bad game.

I have a level 50 Jedi Shadow and loved leveling him and the story was awesome. I think your perception of the lightsaber damage could be causing you some grief. Look at the mob's hit pts as stamina instead..they can only have so much..each time they block or dodge, parry a lightsaber's hit they lose stamina...so when it hits zero..they can'nt block or dodge a lightsaber's blow and die.

Why are you still posting here if you donot like the game? I tried Rift...did not like it and moved on. You never saw me on thier forums complaining about thier game.:p If the troll shoe fits..then it is clear you're a troll.

It is far too late now for the required game mechanics to change, but I would have done it much differently to help match the lore.

Let's say you're a jedi. Someone shoots at you. If you get hit by a laser, it would burn you badly and cripple a limb at best; at worst, it would kill you if it hit a critical area. But, you're a jedi and the force lets you deflect it. We all know that's how the lore should work.

To translate that into a game with numbers and balance, you would have to get rid of the health bar. Replace it with an endurance bar for force-users. Eventually, you get too worn out to defend yourself from that fatal shot. This would require a lot more work on the part of the animators to make it look smooth, but it would help the lore feel right.

I'm not exactly sure how to make that work for non-force users without straying from the lore. Either a cortosis-weave armor, or shield generator would have to protect you.

Anyone who posts something negative about the game you are a fanboi of is a troll, apparently.

Trolls aren't looking for serious discussion. The poster above me is an example of a troll.

I'm continuing to play the game for the story until something better comes out.

Game is junk will die soon

The game will not die, but I have no doubt it will fail to meet the overall expectations that EA told their investors and shareholders that it would in several conference calls in the past year.

Expectations that were unrealistic, to begin with.

That's cool. You are still playing the game tho. The poster I was refering to does not even still play it apparently. Personally I think BW should remove posting rights on the forums once you cancel your sub for the game. And if you check my posting history..you will see I have made some negative posts about the game and still beleave it needs some improvements. But the positive parts of the game still out number the negative ones by far imo.

All I can say is, if you have only played one class, space-bar'ed through it and didn't take time to absorb the story, then you are missing out on some of the best parts of the game completely.

I loved WoW, had great memories and played it since beta (Until I cancelled my account 2 months ago), and it is tragic that this game is compared to WoW as it stands now. Since vanilla launch WoW had just as many haters, bugs, etc. I remember all the rage posts about pallies and locks getting mounts, mount costs were too high, inbalance, pvp, raid content etc.

Some of the ragequit posts were so common that blizz put references to them in the game, such as the noob pacifier and broken IWIN button in the PvP areas that you could loot.

I get bi-polar about Swtor, one hand I get frustrated at a game mechanic (Sentinels, grr!! And why the floor buffer mounts?! I want to ride a taun taun! :) ), to the next moment loving the story and feeling engaged.

I don't plan on quitting, Bioware has stated that they have TONS of content planned, and as a father of 2, with a full time job, family, etc, this game seems to be more suited to me. Point is, I recognize for the hardcore crowd, it may not be the bees knees, but try some more classes, give it a chance.

And if not, good luck to you. :)

... or shield generator would have to protect you.

That is actually genius.

Too bad they decided to cookie cutter mmo this project instead of something new like that.

No one can get hit by anything as long as their shield gen. / force senses are up, but once depleted, get royally ripped in seconds.

That would be awesome.

I feel really bad for the story creators on this game. They did SUCH an amazing job, and what really worries me is that if this does not work no MMO in the future will pay for such an immersive storyline when they know it won't guarantee on success.

The game gets ..boring really quick

I dont think i have played a mmo yet that turns boring so fast

Neither me or my friends have that feeling on "i want to logg in when i get home from work" feeling

Theres a huge anticlimax when you get to 50, theres a big void of..nothing

I logg in to do the daily pvp quests, then i tab out, i dont come back before the character is logged out, then i just close the game.

I want to relax with some nice mmo when i get home, but this will hardly even keep me going until gw2 :(

First let get over this fanbois rage against critsian (don't mind my spelling). If the complaint is constructed, then by all mean let hear it and seek out solution. Just most of crictizian is "This is a WOW clone", or it sucks. That not helpful.

Now as for the OP complaint, I agree. And the reason for no solution is there no eary one. As for the lightsaber, the one solution is a Halo shielding. When the Shield drop to zero, a hit by a blaster or Lightsaber kill. You need some animation to show the shield when being hit. The catch, what about the wildlife or the native. I don't see Womp Rats and Tusken Raiders having such shields. And here the issue. You can't have a boss that is able be killed with one shut. So if anybody has a good idea on that one let hear it.

As for the second one I totally agree, but here the problem. This is a MMO. Now in games like KOTOR and Psi-Ops. You gain abilities and as yo gain abilities you find out that at some point you need those abilities. If you were to lack them then you would not be able to projess. The problem is let say there a quest that at some point you need TK. Ok the Jedis can do it, but how about the Troopers? Ok give them Grappling Hook. But then this begin to feel like a homogensis of idea, same power different look. Class quest as you develop you need to learn to use your abilities work. But non-class quest. Not sure how.

Now that said, yes the AI should be getting smarter and using more tactics.

As for gear I came from D&D table top, yeah I'm a geek deal. Gear all had stats, but most also had side abilities. A cloke that made you invisible, a sword that heal you when you dealt damage, ect. This would be great to add to this game where certain mods and gear are not bestowing staight stats, but great side abilities. Sith Robe for Republic that would cause the general Imperal Mob not to attack you, Heat Seeking Assault Cannon, ect anything but +4 Will, +10 Endurance. The only catch is you have to make this balance between the faction and equal chance of drop.

I played with an Assassin to 18 until my friends switched to light side. Another friend of mine started on dark side and wouldn't switch, so I made an Operative that is around 25 now so I can play with him.

I almost never press the space bar to skip dialogue. The story is the best part about this game, just like the KOTOR series. I will probably make new characters until I run out of new ones to make, or the next great game comes along.

I don't see this being a game I will stick with because I got tired of the "bigger numbers = more fun" formula in a couple months of playing WoW's end-game.

nope, of all the stuff they could copy from wow they chose the worst of them, dailies , pvp grind, pve grind in flashpoints to get a raiding guild etc, all the goodies that are making people giving up on the current mmos, it just burns you out, sadly bioware failed to understand that.

sadly i subbed for 3 months so im stuck until april making alts to check the story, wich is without a doubt the best in the game and has no macth in the current mmo market.

bioware fanboy btw, but completely fed up of wow after 7 years, i cant stand no more of that crap anymore, even in star wars mode.
