Khoifish
All, Can anyone help me decide between mumble and ventrilo? I've heard some nice things about Mumble but haven't been able to test it in a raid setting yet. How does Mumble differentiate from Ventrilo (which we currently use as a guild)

I've heard some nice things about Mumble but haven't been able to test it in a raid setting yet. How does Mumble differentiate from Ventrilo (which we currently use as a guild) while ive never used mumble, I can speak on ventrillo in this game. IT IS NOT VENTRILLO FRIENDLY!! there are many many many instances where after keying my mic the same way I have for years, the SWTOR UI locks up on me and I cannot click on anything. happens constantly Im surprised I have not broken ctrl UU edit: this happens to my friends as well. Rophez
I've had people tell me mumble has much better sound quality, but seriously, my vent server sound quality is perfectly clear with my guildies. Not sure how you can improve on that...
KittyPrawn
I liked that mumble turned down the volume of other things when people were talking, and that it had an overlay in games that let me see who was talking. I liked that ventrilo let me adjust the volume of individual people. Also, because my man and I sometimes log on the same vent, I like that ventrilo lets me mute my sound but still talk. Mumble makes me mute it all. I prefer ventrilo. And for some reason you have to run ventrilo as an admin in order for it to work with this game. Def, I dont have those same UI lockups when Im not using vent. I have been monitoring this closely... since beta actually. I can take some SS of my coorespondance with cust serv pre release.. they said the knew about it then, yet still not fixed.
Mirmirmi
My guild uses Mumble for raiding. It has a slightly nicer quality than Vent, although not an amazing difference. It has a nice overlay, which you can resize and place on your screen anywhere convenient - this is a nice feature that I like. It has a "priority speaker" feature, which when activated on a person lowers the volume of anyone else talking when the priority speaker speaks. This is great for raid leaders or tanks who need to get something urgent out. It has not interfered with the UI, game, or anything in anyway; so it works. It equalizes voices the best it can; the loud are softened and soft increased automatically. This feature doesn't work perfectly, but it really dampens sudden screams really well. Contrary to popular belief, you -can- change the volume levels on individuals with Mumble.
KittyPrawn
Contrary to popular belief, you -can- change the volume levels on individuals with Mumble. How? I couldn't find it and my guild went back to ventrilo because none of the guys who used mumble for a while knew how.
eadnams
I know Mumble has iOS (and other platform?) Apps, I like that.
iain_b
I put up a Mumble server on my home connection (25/25 FiOS) so one of my guildies didn't have to keep paying the Ventrilo bill, but everyone just kept using Vent. They both have their positives and negatives. Mumble seems to be a bit more of a hassle from an administrative standpoint- at least when you are running your own server. And for some reason you have to run ventrilo as an admin in order for it to work with this game. It's this way for every game under Windows 7... This happens with mumble also. I stoped using ventrilo when it got bugged with Windows 7. Now I only use mumble because everything with mumble is better. It has better sound quality, less latency (better for arena/pvp) and it eats less resources at the same quality. There is simply not a single reason NOT to use mumble over any other voip software. It is the best voip software and it is free.
Pink_Saber
Mumble seems to deal with latency better, in my experience. The sound quality difference? Can't say I've noticed much of one, really, but I've found Mumble to be a lot less laggy.

iain_b
You sure it has anything to do with your vent key? This UI tends to lock up with or without ventrillo. It is directly related to having your push-to-talk button in Vent tied to a mouse button. For some reason when you push your bent button and simultaneously click on a button in the UI the mouse gets locked out from the UI. The two ways to fix it are: 1) Ctrl-U twice 2) Locate the UI button that you clicked when it happened (if it's in the actionbar the button will light up when you press your left-click button). Then simultaneously key up vent and click that specific UI button again.
gbrain
I have used both but Vent for us is the best. with the latest version there is also a feature called "ducking" which allows vent to reduce the game volume by 50/80% when talking. but saying that we have create a cut scene channel when you want to listen and not get disturbed. I can take some SS of my coorespondance with cust serv pre release.. they said the knew about it then, yet still not fixed. It most definitely has nothing to do with Ventrilo and has everything to do with the key to which you are pushing. I am guessing it is Mouse Button 4 (mouse thumb button). As for the Thread topic: The MAJOR difference between ventrilo and mumble is that mumble is an open source platform, and you can download the server with unlimited slots as opposed to 'renting' a registered ventrilo server. The sound quality in mumble is only marginally better than ventrilo. The interface for both client and server of mumble is more complicated than ventrilo which can be either a good thing or a bad thing depending on your general knowledge of how these applications work. I have used both programs heavily, and I prefer mumble SPECIFICALLY because i have free reign with a free server.

Rheatosa
Mumble! The latency is better, the sound is sometimes better (depending on what codec you had vent using), the UI is better, and it's free! It's also far easier to customise by e.g. making people's portraits show up in the overlay, integrating with a forum login system, or what-have-you. I probably only care about this because I'm a programmer, though.
Ronamo
I prefer Mumble for the automatic equalization, the priority speakers, the high quality, and for the comparatively lower cost servers than Ventrilo or Teamspeak.

I'm saying it isn't a problem for me except with this game. This game isn't the only one I play, so I think I would know. Especially because I know the difference between starting ventrilo from my start menu and starting it from my taskbar.
