Alessia
Anyone who can tell me the key differences? I know vanguard is supposed to be a tank and commando is supposed to be DPS, but is the DPS difference huge? Is the Vanguard a good tank? Is it good DPS? I don't know if I want another tank after Sith Juggernaut. (Horrible class, rotation for even basic grinding is a nightmare to figure out) But at the same time I wouldn't pick Commando just because they seemingly carry larger weapons, i'm fine with using a rifle if the DPS is similar. ADMAwesome
Well you can also dps as a vanguard. The tree breakdown is like this they share a tree (which seems to be heavily focused on pvp its called Assault (if I remember right) but vanguard also has another dps tree, don't know what it is called as I went commando. Commando also has combat medic if you wanted to heal. So you have 2 dps trees and a tank tree for vanguard and 2 dps trees and a healing tree for commando. Also if you went commando you don't have to use assault cannons you could still use a rifle if you wanted to but if you are going for damage they do put out a higher number then rifles. Twor
Commando has ez-Mode grav round spam for the 1-Button player who likes big numbers
melonjudge
I have a 48 vanguard, my buddy has a 46 commando, commando are DPS/healz, vanguard are tank/DPS, I love my vanguard, attack from range and then going in for some melee beatdowns is awesome to me. they are great tanks as they are ranged and do not have to melee everything like a jedi gaurdian. Commandos are sweet too, they do from my position do more dps if they play it right, plus they have grav round spam if they spec the tree. Personally its up to you, if endgame you want to heal then go commando, if endgame you want to tank go vanguard, if endgame you want to DPS then either is fine, id suggest getting a trooper friend and one gooing vanguard and the other commando, tank and healz respectively, then go into WZ, its fun
Lyability
I run both, my vanguard (SS) is 50, my commando is 26 (Gunny). Commandos dps, yes, and in my experience, vanguards will not even approach the dps level of the commando. Likewise, my SS vanguard is a beast, near unkillable in PvE. Note: PVP, shields do not work, making that whole skill tree null and void. My gunny is a glass canon. Side thought about (PvE) gunny, its boring to play. Grav round grav round grav round.... meh. Disappointing. I might roll assault for PvP. SS vanguard, is also kinda boring as your damage is abysmal, but at least you're moving around harpooning stuff, storming mobs, smacking them with the butt of your weapon.... I, personally ( I stress personally) ran into survivability issues as a dps specced vanguard when PVE soloing. When grouped, I thought other dps classes get the job done better. BUT for tanking, I absolutely love my SS vanguard. my 47 cents. Edited January 27, 2012 by Lyability
Unext
I run a Vanguard DPS Hybrid 8/8/25 and I do as much dammage as anyone in the raid. To be fully effective you need to fight at 10m and in (stock strike 4m). I am highly mobile and have great short range AOE. Vanguards put dots on the target also, they have interupts and greater survivability. I am 4/5 EV HM and 5/5 Hutt Palace HM. Really the choice is : Vanguard = Tank or Mobile Melee DPS Commando = Heals or Stationary Range DPS I enjoy being able to move and kill.

What gives a Vanguard "greater survivability" outside of speccing in the tank tree? The Commando has all of the same defensive cooldowns and has heals, so I'm genuinely curious what makes a Vanguard tougher.
