AnUnearthlyRed Posted January 26, 2012 Posted January 26, 2012 Hello, I've just started playing this game a few days ago and so far I've been a little confused about the importance of light side and dark side points. I'm currently playing a Republic Smuggler and hoping to be a healing character. Should I be actively trying to fully max one of the alignment bars? I've currently just choosing the dialogue options I liked rather than taking the light/dark points into consideration. Thank you for responses.
Faldaith Posted January 26, 2012 Posted January 26, 2012 Dark/ligth side points are for 3 reasons: 1. Enables choices in quests good/bad 2. Decide facial looks (darkside = forcecorruption, just looks) 3. Items are Dark/lightside requested (example, for a relic a darksiderank of II is needed) For every darkside item, there is a light-side equal So no, side-choice doesn't effect your skills, but it wil enable you into some extra items and gear. Therefor it is advisable to get lightside or darkside V when you reach lvl 50
the_clanless Posted January 26, 2012 Posted January 26, 2012 There are two effects of alighnment. One, certain items, particularly color gems, and items from light side dark side venders on the fleet, require alighnment to use. Second, if you get a lot of darkside points, you go all Sith looking unless you turn off that option. Personally I say pick whatever you like and let the points fall where they may, but arguably you should max one way or the other for access to the vender items.
LaniAkavir Posted January 26, 2012 Posted January 26, 2012 For those that only care about PVP and stats, they would definitely spacebar everything and pick only one alignment choice. But on the other hand, there are those that embrace the role of their characters and choose what would be best fit for their characters' actions. In which my trooper would most definitely go Dark Side if that is what it takes to win the war against the Empire, but generally Light Sided when it comes to helping the citizens or researchers of the Republic. I'd say go for what you like best and disregard those alignment points. Don't be an elitist and enjoy what the game has to offer that the other MMOs don't, epic storyline with multiple ways of expanding the story!
paul_preib Posted January 26, 2012 Posted January 26, 2012 Hello, I've just started playing this game a few days ago and so far I've been a little confused about the importance of light side and dark side points. I'm currently playing a Republic Smuggler and hoping to be a healing character. Should I be actively trying to fully max one of the alignment bars? I've currently just choosing the dialogue options I liked rather than taking the light/dark points into consideration. Thank you for responses. Didn't read replies so I apologize that it's likely already well covered but This is essentially a role-playing/character building benefit with some minor helpful tidbits that won't make or break your character. Each fleet has a vendor that sells light and dark side items. These are a few low-mid level orange items at a given alignment (nice but nothing you can't get through other means fairly soon after), items to fill your relic slots, and the main thing a lot of folks consider-- color crystals. None of these items will be of an impact come endgame aside from the color crystals as certain colors are ascribed to certain alignments (cannot be light attuned for red, cannot be dark attuned for blue/green). Because of the access on that front it is probably best to at least build an attunement-leaning class (i.e. light one or two, dark one or two) but in no way a must on any front. Likewise the gear at each relative attunement is virtually the same so there is no "I heal so I should probably be light" kind of a concept to worry about. At the end you can even do heroics/flashpoints/other repeatable content to farm up your attunement in the way you wish. So with all that long-windedness it ultimately breaks down to--> Play your class the way it best suits you. Make it fun, enjoy your choices and don't feel you have to compromise on 'em.
EvanSnowWolf Posted January 26, 2012 Posted January 26, 2012 It doesn't matter. Whiny "gray siders" are throwing endless fits about "discrimination".. in six months alignment will be pointless, if not sooner.
AnUnearthlyRed Posted January 26, 2012 Author Posted January 26, 2012 Great, my questions have been thoroughly answered, thanks to everyone.
Blindfait Posted January 31, 2012 Posted January 31, 2012 So I'm making my jedi shadow dark (sounds kinda like a candy bar or maybe I'm hungry...think I'm hungry). I want to go all or nothing but don't wanna switch sides. It wont make me will it? I'm already dark I with no light pts, but if people are gonna start hating me, or working with me, I'd rather not...lol. Though I do think it cool if you'd be able to switch sides...but I'm glad I wont be forced to do it. Even though my companion hates most of my decisions...the dork. Gonna get something to eat now...lol. Thanx for the info guys!
Sasheria Posted January 31, 2012 Posted January 31, 2012 Dark/light side is your own personal choice. As other have stated, it allows you to have access to certain dark only/light only equipment. If you choose to be republic, you will NOT join empire if you are Dark 5 or anything (once republic, you will always be republic. unless future expansion change that) Note: certain companions like you to choose light/dark side (conversation choices) I notice that on Bounty Hunter companion Mako like light sided answer for Black Talon normal Flashpoint (you can earn upto 455 max affection per run only on light not as much if you go dark side.)
omniqix Posted February 1, 2012 Posted February 1, 2012 note that you can disable the feature that makes your character look differently if he is dark side ("Sith Corruption") in the preferences menu under the social tab
