clearsighted
Am I the only one that was ready to punch Gearbox in the face? My Trooper is this big, bearded dude with weathered features, and the intro is some dude calling him a kid eight times a minute for the first conversation. It's like they wrote the dialogue assuming we'd all be playing teenagers. To be fair, later in the story, they treat you more like Commander Shepherd. But starting out, it's obnoxious. You're fresh out of the acadamy. You're a kid in any veterans eyes.

Cheeseblaster
You start out as a Sergeant. Doesn't matter. Even guys fresh out of the military academies in the US are considered kids by guys they outrank. Have to prove yourself first.
Blastback
You think that SEAL Team 6 or Delta Force don't consider their new members kids until they've proven themselves in the unit?
mutee
You think that SEAL Team 6 or Delta Force don't consider their new members kids until they've proven themselves in the unit? Not if they're 40 no, only a moron would say otherwise. Newbie? Sure, kid? No, just no.
DoomDispenser
Your character isn't actually "fresh out of the academy" when the game starts. At one point someone mentions the missions your character did beforehand.
