How does the game decide what missions are available?

So, I now have lvl 400 in both Scavenging and Underworld Trading and over the process of running these missions I've noticed that it always seems harder to find missions for stuff that I need. The best example is in Underworld Trading, which has Luxury Fabrics, Companion Gifts, and Underworld Metals, and only the metal is useful to me in crafting...but it seems like there's some sort of maximum number of times you can run a mission before you need to run other missions, and I'm not just talking about a mission being unavailable while someone is working on it. I mean, there are times when all my companions will be free to go on missions and yet there will be NO underworld metal missions, so I'll be forced to run a companion gift mission until a metal mission appears. It gets very frustrating and I haven't been able to find any sort of rules for how this work, so I could better predict and plan which missions I should go on. Any help would be much appreciated.

I think actually it's just Underworld Trading that has the issue. The metals missions lately have been not just scarce but completely missing for long periods of time. Logging out, doing missions etc. doesn't seem to fix it as it should. Bug it, the more people that do the better.

The only comforting thing is it's not just you and you're not crazy. ;)

Have to agree with metal = scarce.

Synthweaver, so use both metal and fabric, (sell both light and heavy) I find it *far* harder to keep a supply of fabric around than metal. And prices on the GTN reflect this.

'Course, I understand at least a couple other tradeskills also use the metal, but not sure if any other use the fabric, which would also explain the GTN discrepency... lots more demand for metals, and lots of people running the blue/purple missions and getting fabrics they have no use for, thus extra supply.

Sorta makes me wonder if they meant to make metals more common in order to match up to the inevitable increased demand, but got the odds backwards.

So I notice I'm low on tier 3 rare metals so I open my UT mission window...

Rich Yield Rank 3 Companion Gifts

Moderate Yield Rank 3 Companion Gifts

Bountiful Yield Rank 3 Companion Gifts

Moderate Yield Rank 3 Companion Gifts

Bountiful Yield Rank 3 Companion Gifts

So ya... the list is borked...

It seems to me that you need to complete certain missions before gaining access to another. For example, when I complete a mission for a moderate yield of metals, once my companion gets back then I have access to a rich and bountiful yield. When I complete those, it goes back to initial moderate yield mission. I could be wrong (don't have access to check ingame right now) but at the higher levels there is only one named mission for each of the different yields.

If I'm not mistaken, which ones display is entirely random (and if you already have a companion running a particular mission, it isn't going to potentially appear again until it is completed).

Also if I'm not mistaken, there are certain actions (besides mission completion), that reset which ones actually display for you. Logging on/off, getting on/off your ship are 2 examples that I heard but I'm sure there are more.

Yes it is annoying (and probably unintentional game design), but if you really just want to run one type that may be the solution for you.

Thank you. I did not know about the zoning to change the mission list. This helps immensely.

I'm fairly certain the system uses advanced statistical analysis to determine which mission types you're most likely to pursue, and then makes sure they come up the least. :p

Diplomacy has similar issues with LS/DS factors. If you're trying to avoid too many of one type, that type will inevitably be the only one available of the level/mission type you want.

Jokes aside, I've found an effective way to game the system. In short, send as many crew as you can on the unwanted missions, then zone. It decreases the available pool of missions and increases the chances of something you want coming up.

If you get good mission options, cancel as many unwanted ones as you're offered good ones - the list doesn't reset when you cancel missions and canceled missions refund the full credit value. If you don't get any good options or if you don't get enough good options, repeat until satisfied.
