Midnightxrdm
Reposting from MMORPG.com forums. Original doesn't belong to me. ******************************************************** For those that are interested, Neil Harris, president of HeroEngine, wrote a blog which sheds some light on how things developed between HeroEngine and SWTOR: http://www.heroengine.com/2011/11/heroengine-meets-starwars/ Some interesting points: EA/BW liked the Hero development tools, and speed of prototyping: “I need this,” said Gordon. “I am about to start a special project and these tools will let us build and prototype fast and get something running in a hurry.” EA/BW were Hero's first sale, the engine was in fact not for sale yet up to that point: “It’s not productized yet,” we told Gordon. “There are whole sections of code that is only roughed in and not optimized for performance or security. And there are very few comments and very little documentation.” EA/BW were planning on making major changes to the engine anyway: “(Gordon): We are going to have tons of engineers. We can finish it ourselves. We’re going to want to modify your source code for our special project anyway.” HeroEngine does not know what EA/BW did with the source code: "We were concerned over their making major changes to our engine, but we loved the size of the check that came with the deal." "Our role began and ended long ago" So the Hero engine that is used in SWTOR currently is not the same engine that is being sold by HeroEngine themselves. It has been extensively modded by EA/BW over the last 4-5 years, because they have access to the source code.
PanikSpreder
Old news and doesn't really shed any specific light on alot of peoples performance problems in various places. But it still makes you wonder none the less
Midnightxrdm
Old news and doesn't really shed any specific light on alot of peoples performance problems in various places. But it still makes you wonder none the less I think it does more then one thinks. It is pretty opvious that Bioware Engineers were given an unfinished game engine with lacking documentation to start developing SWTOR...
Arkerus
This is interesting but rather pointless. It has been beaten to death. We all know they are using a modified version of the hero engine since they had their own internal engineers. As with all engines, patching over time will help a lot. I don't have any major issues now so I don't really see the point in beating this dead horse. Do I have some minor gripes? Yes. I don't really care though because overall I think bioware did an awesome job with this game. I am confident most/all of the issues will be fixed in time. Tarka
I'm disppointed that the devs of HeroEngine and Bioware are no longer working together. Logic would have suggested that they collaborate somewhat, with the HE devs working on the engine, whilst Bioware could focus on the content. Obviously that's not to be. A shame really. It means that Bioware are essentially having to reinvent the wheel, not getting inspiration and help from the very makers of the engine. Thus potentially stunting the growth of Bioware's own product due to potentially inefficient coding, lack of understanding about the true capabilities of the engine, and not gaining benefits from the latest updates to the "commercial" version that is being constantly updated. But I suppose that's what you get when you decide to sever ties with the manufacturers. Edited January 20, 2012 by Tarka

Zannis
A lot of factors will lead to the game's performance improving over time. Bioware will patch and refine their engine. ATI/Nvidia will eventually patch any issues on their end. People eventually upgrade their hardware, there will eventually be $50 graphics cards that can run this game at killer framerates. Not much consolation to those who can't play the game today, though.
Pink_Saber
I think it does more then one thinks. It is pretty opvious that Bioware Engineers were given an unfinished game engine with lacking documentation to start developing SWTOR... Well, yeah. That's old news, too. They took the unfinished Hero Engine and fleshed it out. We've known all this for a very long time.
IhaveNoGod
Stuttering is typically a sign of lack of VRAM. It only happens in SWTOR. Rift, WoW, EVE, BF3, Allods... etc all working very well on max settings. ------------------ System Information ------------------ Time of this report: 2/6/2012, 07:27:30 Machine name: X-PC Operating System: Windows 7 Ultimate N 64-bit (6.1, Build 7601) Service Pack 1 (7601.win7sp1_gdr.110622-1506) Language: English (Regional Setting: English) System Manufacturer: System manufacturer System Model: System Product Name BIOS: BIOS Date: 02/05/10 19:13:52 Ver: 08.00.10 Processor: Intel® Core i7-2600K CPU @ 3.40GHz (8 CPUs), ~3.5GHz Memory: 8192MB RAM Available OS Memory: 8168MB RAM Page File: 1801MB used, 6363MB available Windows Dir: C:\Windows DirectX Version: DirectX 11 DX Setup Parameters: Not found User DPI Setting: 96 DPI (100 percent) System DPI Setting: 96 DPI (100 percent) DWM DPI Scaling: Disabled DxDiag Version: 6.01.7601.17514 32bit Unicode ------------ DxDiag Notes ------------ Display Tab 1: No problems found.
