Low Level Scoundrel - Could use some help

Jaiyne

Recommended Posts

I recently rolled a Scoundrel and she's currently ~22. I seem to do OK in PvE land, although as a healer main here and in another game, I'm not a terribly good DPS'er generally yet.

Anyway, I feel like I'm just not understanding my role just yet - especially as half the skills I have at this level require me to Take Cover...but yet, as a Scrapper (early on, obviously), most of my skills are melee or short range.

So my question from experienced people - at the lower levels as I level and in PvP, should I even be using the "take cover" skills? They don't seem to fit at all with my other skills, but if I don't use them, I'm probably missing out on a lot of damage otherwise.

Advice appreciated. I'm really unsure of how to approach the diversion in the two skill-sets at early levels. Many thanks.

You don't really need to use cover at all as a scoundrel. Look at your skills like Quick Shot, Dirty Kick etc hardly any of them require cover.

Cover is mainly for gunslingers but you can use it as an "Oh Shi..." button to duck behind cover and avoid damage.

It's kind of stilted.

Ideally, you have Upper Hand x2 up at all times, using Sucker Punches in cases when you can immediately regain the Upper Hand you've spent. You want to use your DPS abilities inbetween Blaster Whips -- so after you get 2 procs of Upper hand, throw out your Back Blast, Vital Shot on silvers and up, Quick Shots as needed, then as Blaster Whip is coming up Sucker Punch, if it regens from the Vital Shot, Sucker Punch again and Blaster Whip. Rinse and repeat.

As I said before, you get Upper Hand for killing a mob. Don't hesitate to reupp Pugnacity or finish him off with a Sucker Punch if it will them.

Keep Pugnacity up when you can -- if you're plowing through pull after pull keep it up, if you're just doing an occasional mob while getting quest items, skip it. Pugnacity is vitally important against bosses or gold stars etc, but realize when you can just use the Upper Hand proc to finish a fight.

Scoundrel is fun 10-30, and gets really fun 36+. Shoot First should really be a L10 ability simply for the Upper Hand proc, it's that important. You can basically Shoot First, Blaster Whip, Vital Shot, Back Blast, and deal incredible burst weaving Flechette Round in. As in, kill a silver in your K.O. burst, and one shot normal mobs.

Really, you're not out anything by starting a fight with Sabotage Charge from Cover and then taking it to melee. Higher levels you won't find it necessary or even particularly useful. Until you flesh out your abilities, use Quick Shot, gradually lessening the use for your normal melee abilities.

TYVM for the advice and help. I don't have Sucker Punch yet, but I believe any time now. Many thanks again for how to approach this as I level :)

Prior to Sucker Punch, Shoot First, and the increased energy regen / extra crit damage on scattergun attacks, Scrapper plays kinda rough. It's a ton better once you have Sucker Punch, simply because you have something to do with your Upper Hand procs.

After Sucker Punch and Flying Fists, you can probably start burning down normals with a Back Blast + Sucker Punch and lucky proc. I'd also make sure you're turning off Wookiee Roar and Cleave and sapping every pull you can. Makes it a ton more manageable, and less wasted resources = faster next pull, can quicken things up considerably.

Hey Jaiyne *huggles*!!! I don't have a whole lot more to say that hasnt' been said. I'm loving my Sawbones Smuggler atm. Right now she's in the mid-thirties. Like others have said I rarely use cover anymore. It was funny before because anytime I played an alt I'd spam my cover key before a fight trying to figure out why it didn't work, now half the time I forget I even have it.

I think the class seems to make more sense once you get into the 30's. More reasons to use stealth fewer reasons to use cover. The class also plays differently depending on if I'm solo or grouped.

PVP perspective:

Up through level 30 or so, I used cover pretty often. Sabo charge and charged burst still do great damage even for a scoundrel and sometimes it's better to take a few shots from 30m than wade into an AOE fest.

As a lvl 50 DPS, I use cover pretty sparingly, but often drop into cover to throw a sabo charge when I am rooted or my enemy is incapacitated by a CC that breaks on damage. I also use it more often in huttball when I'm not in a position to melee someone, but need to do damage to them (knocked off a ramp, someone nuking from upper level, etc). Sabo charge can hit over 4k and charged burst in the 3-3.5k range on crits against lightly armored targets, which is nothing to pass off as useless when it can be done from 30m range.

As a 31 point sawbones healer, you will do respectable damage from range with frag grenades, sabo charge, and charged burst. I go into cover a lot more often when I am full healer spec.

PVE: if I sap or flashbang a mob, i always sabo charge them before attacking unless i'm opening from stealth. That's about it.

Tahhhhhhh! I wondered where you guys ended up! I am playing a Seer Sage as my main (she's 50 and Lee's Sent is also 50), so I thought I would try a Scrapper Scoundrel for PvP, but so far. I suck lol!

I miss you lady!! We are on Helm of Graush if you ever have time to pop over. Much love!

I have been stalking your vids and have learned a ton from them, although not high enough level to really apply the principles yet. Thanks for the perspective, as I think probably not using them at all is a bad call at my current level.

/respect.

Yeah I think I saw on the kin forums thats where you guys ended up. I'm actually playing 2 servers one for republic (with J, Deker Sig) and one for empire (with agony and pwnys). I am considering my Smuggler my main, but like I said she's only 30ish (she is still the highest lvl I have though).

I can't help with scrapper I haven't played with that spec at all. Right now I'm going straight up sawbones tree, at some point I may play around with some sort of hybrid, though I'm not sure yet.

I miss you guys too! Give Lee a hug for me and the rest of the Dagorlads. :D
