Deepmemories
What new things did swtor bring to the table? How has it changed mmo gaming? Here are a couple upcoming titles which will change the future of mmos, we don't know which one will succeed yet but none the less they are all revolutionary. TERA http://www.zam.com/story.html?story=28741 GW2 http://www.zam.com/story.html?story=28708 The Secret World http://www.zam.com/story.html?story=28715
Urko
I wanted a change after elves etc type games and thought SWTOR was the dogs nuts in beta and with all the hype, but its going just like Warhammer Online , Star Trek Online.... so much promise but failing to give... 2 months timecard used so in 2 months if it aint sorted with all the major gripes people are having (or at least main ones), as much as i really really didnt want to play an MMO with pixies , elves and the like ever again , i may be looking at GW2

Tera is not for me the political aspect implemented(run for office and all that crap)is not interesting for me and it sounds very time synchish. Just doesn't sound fun imo. GW2 again not really my type of game i'm a pve guy i'll do some pvp but only when the pve gets a little boring. Gw2 is a pvp game and the pve stuff is not to my liking. Although I hear its f2p so I might give it a try a few months after it is released. Secret World sounds like a Resident evil MMO and doesn't interest me at all. I will say this SWTOR is the last game i'll pre order. Going foward i'm not buying any new MMO until at least 3+ months after release. I'm tired of getting ripped off and this seems to be the standard MMO practice of "buy my game now then we'll fix it after" sorry but i'll pass on that. Kayden
stop lying to yourself stop lying to yourself stop lying to yourself Looks like you're the one who need to stop lying to yourself, none of thoose games are WoW copycats to the extreme, like swtor is. flipper
I hope to be proved wrong because I really want to find an mmo I can use to get back into the genre and I've already invested some time and money into this but...I think in many ways it's devolutionary. The quest dynamic was a brilliant way to alleviate some of the grind on the first run through of each faction but leveling alts is less fun than most mmo's I've played. The class quests have stripped away even the illusion of freedom because nothing can be added that allows the player to deviate from their path. I still think it's the most important mmo though because it's the only one with real financial pull that can either resurrect the sub-based genre or put the final nail in the coffin. We'll certainly know within the year what that outcome is.

Elocke
I see SWTOR as getting the ball rolling. Up until now every endeavor has been lackluster, aside from maybe Rift(very subjective though, personally I like Trion and Rift's style, just don't like how small and shallow it feels). Personally, I think GW2 is going to be the BIG one, but it could be a team effort with SWTOR, GW2 and TSW and if we're really fortunate, ArcheAge. Either way, it's got to be a better year than the last 7 combined.

At least those three games are attempting new things.

Guild Wars is Nothing like what you think its gonna be. If you think this feels like a single player game on PvE... i'll introduce you to GW2. If you think theres no end-game content... i'll introduce you to GW2. If you think theres no addons/macros/LFG tool/dungeons/raids... i'll introduce you to GW2. If you think the game is crap and wanna whine in the forums... i'll introduce you to GW2. GW2 is only good for one thing: PvP. Its always been, it will continue to be. If you're going in expecting good PvE, you're in for a nasty surprise. The only one i'd have hopes on at launch is TERA. It introduces some innovative social systems, nice graphics and gameplay... but it comes from a Korean developer, so the future support is always questionable. It hasn't changed MMO gaming at all, currently its a step backwards from most other MMOs in terms of its features. None of the titles you list offer anything new either, as far as I've seen from their pre-release information. Tera offers a variation in the 'action' MMO genre, but it's 'active battles' aren't new entirely, even the lamented FFXIV had a combat system where character positioning affects damage done and debuffs landed. We'll certainly know within the year what that outcome is. You hit the nail on the head for me with Devolutionary. They should have spent all that time looking at what makes MMO's popular, they could have looked at the failed launch of FFXIV and learnt from that, they could have looked at the launch of Rift and its decline and learnt from that. They could have looked at many other MMO's and learnt what makes them popular and implemented those features but it seems like they had a blueprint set out from day one which they stuck to and did not budge from. Dont get me wrong I enjoy SWTOR and I will still be here next month and the month after at least. But its got a lot of work to do to topple the leader. The biggest issue for me is the world that seems so quiet. If I log into WoW tonight in Stormwind there will be people as far as the GPU can render them. When I log into the Republic Fleet tonights I might see the same 20 people I saw last night if I run around for long enough. You know... people tend not to notice things that are really close to them. When you start playing those games and you dont have the voiced content, the morality and choice system, the personal ship, the companions, the engaging crafting done on the go... you will come to realise their true worth and come back. None of the upcoming games has the potencial to make a dent on SWTOR. Their formulas as too different from SWTOR's. They will make a dent on WoW though.
