Sylvurdragon
Have any of you played the old Microsoft game, Freelancer? I think that this style of space combat would be a nice alternative to the current style that we have. I mean, yah the space combat is a nice diversion, but it really doesn't feel like Star Wars...it feels like Star Fox, and I know many of you agree (based on forum posts) What do you think of this as an alternative? or something similar...I know that BW has something in the pipes, and I can't wait to hear what they have to say about it. This is how I think it should be looked at:
justahdude
HEY NOW STARFOX WAS FRIKKIN AWESOME!!!! though it would be sexy as hell to get some rogue squadron like missions and the like. Please make the Space mission reruns go away tho, that was pretty lame.... EDIT: What i mean by rerun is how Javval and Ice field are almost exactly the same... I know i seen them Icicle asteroids before! Edited January 16, 2012 by justahdude

Smallways
I enjoy the diversion of space missions as is and excited about all of the possible routes it can go. On a side note, is it possible to do space missions as a group/fleet?
Sylvurdragon
well maybe I'm just not doing it right LOL - anyone have any suggestions on guides etc? My thing is getting shot from behind. That's where most of my damage comes from...
justahdude
i love me some x3, i burned over 600 hours on that game if you look at my xfire profile... heres a vid of some x3 sexy-ness http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QyATLAxZMz0 if we get space missions that look like that im sold for life... that was a bad video this one is better imo: Edited January 16, 2012 by justahdude
CommieKras
Battlefront II did space combat better and that game came out six years ago. At least you could choose your ship and role (bomber, dogfighter, carrier). How space combat should have been done -Take it off of rails for all that is holy. -Customizable ships. I'm talking aesthetics, functionality, the whole shebang. -Guild capitol ships. May require a lengthy questline, massing of materials, and a fistful of credits to unlock. Able to be outfitted aesthetically, functionally, and serves as a rest area for guildmembers. No cooldown hearthstone to your capitol ship. -Player vs. Player dogfights. -Guild vs. Guild fleet fights. -Space exploration. And this is just a design choice but I'd rather have the capitol ships from Kotor (think Saul Karath's leviathan) rather than the star destroyer knockoffs the Empire got stuck with. OmySpy
Star Fox 64 is one of my all-time favorite games (Star Fox 1 is also equally awesome for its time) and I am perfectly happy that SWTOR took this direction with its space missions. I've done 5 different missions so far (just got the last 2 last night) and so far they feel unique to each other, and most of them feel very epic (especially when you arrive with allied ships) Taking on large frigates and whatnot in my Mantis while listening to chatter from myself and Mako is awesome for me at least, and I only hope more missions are added. I am not against space missions with more freedom (or even some sort of group-play), but I am so far very happy with what there is available. hulduet
Would have been nice if space combat was a bigger part of the game, at the moment it only feels like a sloppy add-on. I'd rather fly around doing the space missions than doing some of quest grinds. The problem is that the space missions are always the same. You're not likely to do the one that takes longer to complete due to the rewards being exactly the same, despite there being several minutes difference in completion. justahdude
like i said i burned over 600 hours into x3, i highly doubt BF2 did space combat better than it... I would imagine space based PvP would be a Expansion bait.
Aedilous
well maybe I'm just not doing it right LOL - anyone have any suggestions on guides etc? My thing is getting shot from behind. That's where most of my damage comes from... I am pretty much always spamming the space bar to combat roll and never stay in one spot. I'm sure I look like my pilot has Parkinson's (and no offense is intended to anyone who does have it) but I usually come out of missions without taking any damage. On another note, make sure you're upgrading your ship. You can buy "equipment" from vendors in spaceports or at IF.
Megasuperb
To be fair, I like space combat. And it leaves a LOT to be added and improved on. ie future patches or expansions.
DiLune
Get the fleet commendation upgrades as well. The ECM Jammer is a godsend on later missions, and its nice to be able to tune your blasters to damage or recharge your shields when you have a moment to breathe. justahdude
much of my damage is running into space debris. Probably why i can easily tell that i have seen them icy asteroids before. for being level 36 i have seen about 6 or 7 truly unique space missions with 3 being reruns with tougher enemies. Only level 46, but they are all duplicate at this point. What does annoy me about space combat (and I do like it) is that I can't just blast to lightspeed when I have completed all the mission objectives. If I finish a minute early...continue flying. cozmic_force
Space exploration would be a very welcomed addition. I mean there's gotta be upwards of 1 billion planets in a galaxy like this. It wouldn't be hard to have the server randomly generate planets as you "explore" the galaxy, occasionally finding loot or a massive amount of resources to harvest, etc. This is called Procedural Generation (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Procedural_generation), and has been used in great success for games like the 'Elite series' in the past. I absolutely fell in love with elite 3 back in the day. The sheer number of planets you could explore and land on was overwhelming, and each was unique... with its own landscape, weather and everything else. I would love for something like that to be added, exploration could be fun and profitable, and give us something to do instead of just pvp/flashpoint all damn day. And with procedural generation, the amount of planets/locations you could "discover" would be basically limitless... and isn't that what MMOs should be about? The world (or universe in this case) should feel boundless... it should be a world you can't get enough of!
