The Battle of Yavin? Ive read a lot of the Star Wars novels and at the start they all state how many years before or after they are to the Battle of Yavin. Why?

It basicly just sets the time frame, the Battle of Yavin is essentually the destruction of the first battle star, or in easy terms, the movies time frames. The vast history future around star wars spans thousands of years, so knowing if it was before or after the movies gives you a period of history perspective.

That is when Jesus came to Yavin and walked on water and taught wookies not to eat of the evil democrat fruit tree.

Wookies don't live on Yavin you nub hahaha. That being said, I'm sure spacejesus could have summoned them there.

In the thrawn trilogy they wrought the date/calendar change off as "why do new governments always bring in a new calendar" I believe it was Luke who said it near the beginning of the first book

Because the battle of Yavin is the first story in the Star Wars setting that we got to experience in the real world.

Most people who were born before 1990 think of A New Hope as "the beginning" of the Star Wars universe; everything outside the classic trilogy is either backstory, filler story, or follow-up.
