StarDaimyo
Hello people. I have tried reading up on various game mechanics the last couple of days and I have some questions. If anyone can answer them or point me in the right direction I would greatly appreciate it. I also appreciate any corrections to my claims in this post. First; Orange items and mods. I have received orange items and understand that they will scale with the mods etc I put into them so that they remain current as I level them up with new mods. However I have not dared to buy any mods yet (in GTN or from Commendation Vendors) because I am not sure how they will scale. As I understand it the Armoring mod changes the level requirement of the item and so I have not tried to modify my items in fear of suddenly raising the level req of the item above my own level. Is there a guide or a list which explains what level req modified orange items will get based on the level/type of mods etc that are put into them? Commendations – spend them on what? And in continuation of the orange items and mods …. I was thinking of spending my Coruscant Commendations on mods etc to upgrade my gear – is this wise or are they better spent on other things? I ask because I am unsure whether it is best to use Commendations as I level (am level 18 now) or just save them for something grand (and Commendation Vendor exclusive) in the future. (My plan was to buy the max level of various mods/armoring for my gear from the Coruscant vendor but as the previous paragraph stated I am unsure if this will scale my gear to a too high level.) I hope I have been able to explain clearly what I am unsure of, and hope to receive some help in this matter.
Bammur
If you can equip the mod, then you can equip the armour. The mod shows it's level so you should be fine to use that as a guide. Armour mods raise the level for armour, barrels for guns, and hilts for light sabres. I have found that I can maintain my gun and 4 or so other pieces of orange armour through the levels via commendation and reward mods. Some later planets are easier than the early ones, in that you end up with 20+ commendations, so add your orange gear as you feel comfortable maintaining it. Edit: there is no point saving your commendations for later, unless something changes in a later patch, because you can only spend them as is, no upgrading to higher levels as they had in beta. FYI, all of the vendors can be found on the space station (except Quesh, on the Imperial side) so you can browse and plan ahead. Lheim
First, the level requirement of the armoring mod will be the new level requirement for your armor. Also, you'll see if you mouseover mods that they have 'rating' numbers - both on the vendor, and if you mouse over the mod items in your armor. Higher the better - and any two items with the same rating number'll have the same base armor/damage. Your commendations really ought to be spent on gear or mods - either one'll work, just depends on if you want to keep a particular appearance or get a new one. You can't trade those commendations up, might as well use 'em. What you pick is really up to what your situation is at the moment. If you're lacking a particular piece, feel free - heck, I've even used commendation gear to fill in gaps in my companion's equipment. Modifiable gear for companions is quite nice; it's almost easier to keep them up to date with your level.
Infalliable
"scale" is not really right and may be what's causing the confusion. A mod you place in them will not get better on it's own over time. You can "replace" the mods with better ones to constantly improve (or customize) the item. Elear
Armour mods raise the level for armour, barrels for guns, and hilts for light sabres. By level he means item lvl, not required one. Mods have their onw required levels to wear. In most cases it's better to spend comendations on gear if you don't have modable one for that slot, and on mods once you have. In most cases, since vendors seem to be bugged and don't have specific types of mods, and often offered items end up with better mods that related mod vendor sells. You might also want to check GTN once in a while once you decide to start modding, on small chance that someone decided to start selling reasonably priced mods on your server. Jenarie
First; Orange items and mods. As I understand it the Armoring mod changes the level requirement of the item and so I have not tried to modify my items in fear of suddenly raising the level req of the item above my own level. The good news is that the game will not allow you to apply a mod to armor that is over your level. So it is impossible for you to make something that you could wear too high level for you. I was trying to prep my next level gear and found that out recently when I had to keep all the parts separated because I couldn't use the augment due to level. Secondly, if you haven't already found it there is a tooltip option that makes mods so much easier to figure out. Preferences -> User Interface -> (Scroll Down) Tooltip -> Show Detailed Item Tooltips While there I would recommend turning on everything else in the tooltip section as well - you can always turn it back off if you don't like it but I've found it invaluable. (My plan was to buy the max level of various mods/armoring for my gear from the Coruscant vendor but as the previous paragraph stated I am unsure if this will scale my gear to a too high level.) You have it right; that is what they are for. There is a commendation vendor on each planet and then all of them are together on the fleet if you want to check the higher ones before spending but basically each planet has a armor vendor and a mod vendor. You can spend any extra ones to upgrade your companion as well. Edited January 10, 2012 by Jenarie
Dasiem
I had a question regarding the base Armor stat on said Orange gear. If I say have a level 10 Orange piece chest gear and a level 35 Orange piece chest gear and mod it with the exact same mods, will the stats be exactly the same or will the 35 piece edge it out slightly? I would try this on my own but taking my epic mods out of my gear costs like 3-4k credits atm and would bankrupt me playing around with it... Orange gear should have no "base" stats on its own (not derived from mods). Everything is a result of the mods, so they should be the same. Aieny
Custom (orange) items have no innate stats. So placing identical mods in a custom piece gotten at level 10 will have identical stats to a custom piece gained at level 50. The only caveat is the armor type, whether light, medium, or heavy. In other words, you can't compare a light level 10 to a heavy level 50, or a heavy level 10 to a light level 50. The heavy will always have more armor from a given Armoring mod than medium or light armor.
StarDaimyo
Thanks everyone - I am now more confident about the orange gear and the Commendations and I have made use of my aforementioned plan. The tooltip toggle was especially useful in terms of level requirement. Thanks
