Targeting Friendlies for healing?

Leehound

Recommended Posts

I am doing a healing class character (scoundrel) and I find it difficult to target friendlies for healing. My method now is to try and click the person I am targeting, I am sure there is a better way. Can someone enlighten me?

Thanks

I simply click the group UI frame of the person I want to heal and press a heal keybind. The only issue I have is that companions aren't shown in the group UI frame at the moment but I'm hoping they'll add that in soon.

Ahh, that will make it much easier. Could I heal my companion by clicking his picture?

Many Thanks

F1 to target yourself, press it twice to target your Companion.

F2 for Partymember #1

F3 #2

...

Otherwise you can only click their portraits as already mentioned.

Healing is a little bit difficult atm. Even experienced mmo-players tend to target themselves sometimes instead of the target they want to heal.

Maybe they will improve the UI sometime ^^

I think useing the F keys will be much faster.

Thanks!

Happened to me quite a lot.

Anyway, glad I found this topic, because I wanted to ask about this as well.

I could use the pictures on the left side to target, yes, but for example in pvp it's just too many. I want to target my closest ally.

F2 for me doesn't work, because I play on a laptop, and to activate F2, I have to use another special key, otherwise that button would just change my screen brightness.

So I went to the settings to change key binding. I choose "T" to target my groupmates, but in the game it won't work. I tried to check maybe T is associated with something else, but it's not the case.

So now I'm not exactly sure which key I could bind for this...

Ctrl, Alt, and Shift can all be used in conjuntion with other keys, so you could do something like Shift+1 for self, etc.

I'm lucky, my laptop's function keys default to F1-F12, and the other functions (volume, etc.) require me to press the Fn key. There may be a BIOS setting or something for that, but it's better not to muck around in there.

Companions are shown in the Group UI, sort of.

If you look at the player's plaque in the Group UI, if they have a companion out, there will be a smaller plaque for their companion, showing the icon and health bar for the companion.

I was unaware of the F1, double F1 hot keys.

SO...on that note and as a reminder to everyone else, remember you can re-assign hot key functions quite easily.

I think re-assigning F1 to my companion is a great idea. I have a sage and frequently need to keep my companion, Feez (sp?) healed or targeted for a bubble. An assigned F1 key will make that SO much faster!

Hmm, ok, thanks, I'll try to combine it. Don't want anything difficult, as most of the time I'm hitting capslock instead of TAB  But Shift+1 sounds easy.

I am having a terrible time with this as well. I actually prefer selecting party members with the function keys ( I then use the numpad for my heals ).

My problem is that " Select part member 2 " never seems to work. I can get F3 and F4 to target those party members but F2 usually targets no one.

The UI is horribad atm... I can't even do crew quests while doing FPs because the completion window will pop up and hide everyone's healthbars... IMAD

You can enable Operations frames to replace party frames. You do that from Preferences - Game - probably interface - I'm not in game right now, but browse the interface options and you should see it.

What this does is replace your party frames with health bar frames, which you can resize significantly. This will show you exactly who is taking damage at any time. Unfortunately, companions do not show on raid frames, but you can target your own easily by clicking on their portrait. Other people's companions you'll have to target manually.

You'll need this for PvP, since using the function keys isn't useful in larger groups, and clicking people is just a nightmare. There was a bug which caused raid frames not to update properly in PvP, but it may have been fixed by now.

Additionally, learn how to use Focus Target.

Select the main tank and press Alt+F. This will select that target as your Focus.

Hold down Home (I think - it is the Focus Target Modifier keybind) and click a healing ability and it will go to the Focus target not whatever you currently have targeted.

Hold down End (I think - it is the Self Target Modifier keybind)) and click a healing ability and it will go to you not to whatever you currently have targeted.

Annoyingly, cutscenes can turn off focus so you have to reset it.

As a Sith Inquisitor I have Khem Val set to my Focus. I have backquote (`) mapped to Focus Target Modifier and 1 through = mapped to bottom quickbar, where I put healing. So, to heal Khem I hold down ` and press 1 then release both keys.

HTH.

Download VuhDo or another mouse click addon. Oh, wait ...

Actually, I am not one of the people QQing generally about the lack of add ons in SWTOR. Despite being a big add on user in WOW, I am so far finding the lack of add ons somewhat refreshing. But man as a healer I certainly miss VuhDo.

Ctrl+Tab and Shift+Ctrl+Tab will cycle through friendlies like Tab cycles through enemies. You can use that to quickly find someone with low health, and their health bar will show their current hit points, unlike their health bar in the raid frames, which does not always get updated immediately. Once you get the hang of it, it's a lot faster than trying to click on someone in the field.

There's other targeting functions in the keybinds tab. I think shift-f is the default for target closest friendly (in front of you). This one I use a lot in PvP if i don't know which F key they are or they're in the 2nd group. Shift-F1 i think is your companion.

On the keybinding topic, don't forget that if you have a mouse with side buttons you can change the function of them through the software that came with it (or download it from the manufacturers website). I have changed one of mine to shift which makes the shift + 1 etc much easier IMO.

I was having issues as well so I did little research: http://flashheal.net/swtor/healing-with-your-focus-target/

Since I keep seeing people ask about this, here is how to heal your Focus target in Star Wars: The Old Republic. Before we continue, we have to take a look and figure out what the keybinds are, or set new ones that will work better for you.

Hit ESC to bring up the menu.

Click the PREFERENCES button.

Click the GAME tab at the botton of the PREFERENCES window (you should already be here).

Click the Controls option on the left side of the PREFERENCES window.

Check the "Enable Focus Target" check-box.

Click the KEY BINDINGS tab at the bottom of the PREFERENCES window.

Select Targeting option on the left.

Find the "Set Focus Target / Swap Focus Target" keybind.

Choose a new keybind if you want (I use the + key).

Scroll down further until you find the "Focus Target Modifier".

Choose a new keybind if you want (I use a mouse button).

Now we're ready to actually use this functionality!

Target your companion, or anyone else that you need to heal frequently.

Press your "Set Focus Target" keybind.

Hold down your "Focus Target Modifier" keybind.

You should see that the mouse cursor turns blue.

Use a healing ability, and it should now be applied to your Focus target.
