Has this game made BioWare profit yet?

It's known that the game had over 2 million pre-orders. That means, lots of 60 bucks. I have no idea what percentage of people ordered DDE or CE, but I know lots of people did.

Worst case scenario, 60x2 million pre-orders, that makes it AT LEAST, 120 million bucks made.

How much did the game cost to make?

I wouldnt say so, but this game has huge staying power and the continued subs will bring in a profit for sure. This game is just what the MMO industry needs to bring in fresh faces. Fun leveling. If it wasnt for a friend telling me about end game, I would have quit WoW around lvl 40 (started in WoTLK) because leveling was so incredibly boring.

Sorry got off topic, but I doubt its netted a profit yet, but give it time and this should become a cash cow for BioWare and (unfortunately) EA.

I believe the short answer would be No.

I'm sure they are on their way to profitability, but realistically they will need people who have already purchased to continue to play.

They aren't going to get 100% of the money from sales of the game, the game stores and other vendors that sell the game will take a large chunk out of that.

So you may want to cut that 59.99 of profit your assigning per copy by some significance.

The long run profit is really in the subscription fees.

If a game like WoW has 8 mil subs they are looking at ~119,920,000 a month, over a billion in income a year. That is where the money is going to be for this game

Yeah, BW/EA already made back their initial investment from Box sales alone. The game's budget was around $150 million, give or take.

People who claim that it was $300 million are just repeating a false rumor.

I think that would be assuming EA/Bioware keeps 100% of the MSRP. They don't. Brick and Mortar retailers will take their cut. We kind of have to make a prediction/guess to figure out how much money actually went to EA/Bioware. To do that we would need to know how many were digital sales vs physical sales by an e-tailer (other than EA) or by a brick and mortar store.

I'm just curious, how is that in all the posts I've seen quoting this number, no one ever thinks that the vendors selling the games might want to make some money too?

Amazon, game stop, walmart....ect

I know some people do digital downloads, but a lot more go to the store to buy it.

BW/EA didn't have 2 million pre-orders. The Pre-Order numbers you do see also don't account for any of the returns. The initial budget was ~150 million but it was increased. Read up on these things man. EA/Bioware has not seen a net of over 100 million.

I'm well aware that sales price =/= profit.

However, a large number of the sales were CEs (they sold out, afterall) and DDEs.

The investment includes cost of manufacturing, so it's pretty reasonable that with 2 million sales with 33% of those being CE or DDE (a conservative estimate), that they've already made back their initial investment.
