Arturod
Is Swtor phased? Numerous times i am in the same place same planet and same server as my friends but I cant see them (outdoors not in instance). Exact same place. Then when I invite them it says they can join you but there in a different instance. Do you want to join theres. When I join there i can see them. I couldn't see them a minute ago. Is Swtor phased? You're kidding, right? You joined in June of 2011 and you don't know how the game works?

It's not phased per se. Phasing means you do content in a location, complete the content (quests progression, etc) and the location permanently changes and you phase into a new sequence of content (and generally cannot go back). People not in the same phase cannot interact or group. In phasing, the content itself changes (a la WoW phasing). They do use sharding (instancing). When a locale reaches a threshold population for it's design, they create a second copy of it (a shard is a commonly used term, it's a new instance of the same content). This prevents over-crowding of the content (such as too much concurrent competion for quest items/mobs. You can use the games LFG in the social tab to cross shards and group with other players. krisslanza
They do sharding. An easy way to check is open the map. In the lower right hand, if the map is sharded, you'll see a little drop down box that'll say <Planet> (#). The number being which shard you are in. theborch
Yes it is. Like the other poster said when certain planets reach a population limit they create another instance of the planet. Just add your friend to your group and it will prompt them to be moved to your instance.

Note there's 2 ways to change instance on the map. Manually change to another instance which incurs a 30min cooldown.Get invited to a group while out of combat and not in a conversation. This causes the game to ask you if you wish to be teleported to the instance the leader of the group is in. This has no cooldown or affects the cooldown of the manual change. You may ask why would you want to manually change? either to get to an instance with more people or in the case of not getting quest mobs or objectives done less people.
