  1. Just a friendly suggestions - read a few posts in a topic before commenting on it.
  2. Hi all. Personally, I tend not to play female toons (I'm a male). Though I have no problem with men who do (I have a fair number of friends who almost exclusively play female toons), I can't do so easily myself. I had a computer science professor in college that is a huge Second Life enthusiast, and after making some... discoveries... in that game, I just don't feel comfortable playing a female toon anymore. Every now and then I get the urge to see the female side of stories, so I do have a female Sith Warrior that I've enjoyed thus far (only lvl 7). Also, if there's a compelling female character concept, I've been known to create female toons then (such as my female trooper Sam'antha, who I hope to make of the Carter legacy when I get to that point - although an X302 would make for a better space ship ).

  4. Hey all. I have to agree that the general sound of the forums overall is a negative one, but in my experience it's that way in most game forums. Actually, I've found much more of a positive discussion here than in any other game forum I've visited (albeit that's not too many). I'm definitely not what anyone would call on mmo professional, but I have played a couple before (most notably WoW and GW, along with a couple of others), and it really seems to me the people with the most negative (and least constructive) comments are the power gamers - the ones who hit level fifty within the first week, and expect a huge load of endgame content simply because that's what they're used to and expect from an MMO (although there seems to be a large section of people who expected a rehash of SWG, which this most obviously isn't). Basically, I think some people aren't getting what they expected simply because they expected a different game. Some of those people aren't coping with that very well, and are coming to the forums to launch giant complaint threads (now I'm all for constructive criticisms in an attempt to make this wonderful game better, but some of these threads get a bit crazy in the requests). Though I think the game needs some help in some places, I still quite enjoy my time - I've got a 28 gunslinger, 12 consular and 7 warrior that I'm thoroughly enjoying (for different aspects), and I've been playing for a month. Don't see an end to my enjoyment in the near future, and if it does happen, I'll gladly take some time off, play something else, and come back later to see what's changed and what hasn't. Overall, I think this is a fantastic game with great support and a beautiful community, and I can't wait to see what comes from it all next. That's what keeps me playing. TL;DR: A fantastic community, great support and teriffic game keep me coming back, despite complaints from people with differing expectations. Actually, way back when I found a set of rules for generating a Star Wars name (I think it was in a LEGO magazine shortly after they started coming out with LEGO Star Wars) For the first name: Take the first three letters of your first name and combine them with the last two letters of your last name. For the last name: Take the first two letters of your mother's maiden name and combine them with the first three letters of the city in which you were born. So, my actual name is Travis Kuster, my mother's maiden name is Raines, and I was born in Wells, thus, my Star Wars name is Traer Rawel. Unfortunately it has come to be a name I use for an elf wizard D&D character, and now I really don't want to use it in the SW universe (no elves and all ). Hope this helps. Oh, and the point about apostrophes is quite correct - they are your friend.
  7. Hey, there are some darn good articles in those magazines. That aside, I'm male and, althought it's been known to happen, I don't play a female toon very often because I find doing it a bit creepy (although I'm currently thinking I need to create a Vanguard Trooper based on Captain Samantha Carter). I have no problem with other people doing it, but after playing Second Life and seeing what happens there, I just feel weird playing a woman character.

  9. Lol, I understand your frustration. I'm going to assume you haven't gotten an answer as it is rather difficult to define - it means different things to different people. A lot of people would consider it rather synonymous with a southern gentleman (in reference to a male) who is old fashioned in is views of women and the world at large. These views are often chauvanistic, but often not overtly or in an intended manner. To other people it just means backwards and stupid, which is probably where the sore spot really comes in. That's just how I see it though, and I'm sure others will disagree with my definition here - we shall see. Now, I understand not liking the character (I personally have no problem with him, but I am a guy, so who knows) and wanting the option to swap him for someone else (which I think is a legitamate option that may come along some day). What I don't understand are the personal attacks on both sides - just because someone likes one type of person or doesn't like that same type of person doesn't give you the right to demean them or attack them - different people like different things, and I think a bit of tolerance would really go a long way in this world. So, to sum it up, chillaxe people, and don't worry so much about how someone else feels. Enjoy the game for what it is, and if you can't, then leave. Hope everyone's day goes wonderfully
  10. Just had a thought. What if we got titles based on the crafting skill we chose - like I would be Armstech Kostunon. And then when we hit 400, we get a master rank or something like that - Master Armstech Kostunon. I think it would be kind of fun, and it would also allow us to sell our services as crafters. I don't know, just a thought I had. Let me know what you think.
  11. I'm not quite sure what to think of this quote. I understand that you're making a point about whiners, but I really don't think you can fairly apply it to most people who consider themselves casual gamers. I'm most definitely a casual gamer - I spend two or three hours a day playing games at most, and many days I don't play any games at all. I feel no sense of entitlement, and I know lots of people that aren't unemployed losers that have done crazy amounts more than myself in games, and I also don't think these same people are elitest. (However, you can kind of tell the people that are unemployed from those that aren't - although it's getting more difficult as the game gets older) I understand your frustration with these people, but to classify them as casual gamers, or really anything other than whiners as they show up in all types of players (I've known a few of these as well) is just insulting.

  13. I actually quite enjoy this idea as a strong base for a crafting system, but I have one problem. What about PvPers, soloers and Raiders who don't want to spend time crafting or rely upon others for crafting. I'm not saying that top level gear has to be easily available to all, but specifically PvPers and Raiders shouldn't have to rely on systems the don't use to get the best gear. Thus, it would seem to me that BoP gear should drop from Raids and be available to PvPers through rewards that are equals to what can be crafted. If you keep it BoP, you don't have to worry about extras saturating the market, and then those people that choose to not partake in crafting are able to get bad-*** gear of their own. Sure, if they want it to look a certain way other than a few base sets, then they should have to search out a crafter. You have to remember that this game has to keep more than just the crafters happy. Like I said though, fantastic suggestion. Also, as a programmer, most of what you suggest wouldn't be too ridiculous to design (assuming they haven't already shot themselves in the foot by cutting something off), but yes it would take a large amount of time and work. Great suggestion, and I can only hope the community continues to generate more like this.
  14. Why is everyone freaking out about PvP gear nerfs? This comment is all we have to go on, and nowhere in it does it say they're planning on nerfing gear. They talk about reducing the difference, and anyone that can subtract two numbers will tell you there is two ways to do that: reducing the larger number (minuend*), or increasing the smaller number (subtrahend*). Yes maybe they will, but it's also just as likely that they'll create better gear for people just hitting 50, thus preventing them from being owned quite so hard - they'll still have to work to be on par with fully equipped PvPers, it just won't be a ridiculously painful affair. We don't know what's going to happen yet, so just chillaxe people. *assuming a non negative answer
  15. You may prefer that they do that, and that's cool, but I quite enjoy my vanity items in games, and I'm pretty sure there are many others that do as well (but I could be wrong). I don't think it should be a huge priority or anything, as gameplay content is definitely a primary concern, but I think having the ability to pimp my ride, as it were, and show it off to others would be fantastic. That way, as well, I wouldn't have to just ditch or stow an outfit that I find aesthetically pleasing because it doesn't have the best stats - I can display it in my ship. I just think it would be great to be able to express my character in other ways and blow off some steam after work with some artsy decorating Lol, they could also have like car shows or something where you could vote on who's spaceship has the coolest mods and the like
  16. I don't understand people that say "there is no place" for a hard-core crafter in this style of game. It could work just fine with the right additives and tweaks. That being said, I also don't understand all of the doom and gloom, "Bioware hates every one of us" people. They probably have a fantastic reason for not commenting on these boards - first, there are a ridiculous number of posts complaining about the system, so they're obviously not going to reply to them all, and second, there are more pressing, technical bugs in the game that are affecting game play for everyone, not just the crafters. For cryin' out loud, the game has only been released for about a month and a half - give them some time to get things ironed out. Life is not instant gratification (as some of you die hard crafters should know). Patience. In the meantime, continue providing fantastic ideas on what they could add - I can almost guarantee you that some one is reading these forums, and if they enjoy your idea, the just might pass it on. Oh, and have fun I personally think they should make the crafting professions have some way of customizing ships - Armstechs and armormechs can display awesome weapons and armor on the walls, synthweavers can do tapestries and decorations, cybertechs can build little consoles for games or videos and such, and biochem's can genetically engineer some awesome plants they can display.   17. Crafting may be doable by anyone, but you have to admit that it is aimed at PvE-ers, hence no crafted recipes that have expertise as a stat. On top of that, from what I understand (as I haven't PvP'd at all yet) PvP gear is in general better than crafted gear, especially for PvP-ers. Thus, to PvP, you can get the gear you need by PvP-ing - although I don't know how this applies to medpacks and such. I'm glad that you like crafting, and I have to agree that I'm not a huge fan of the BoP, but thinking that it should be changed for PvP-ers seems a bit ridiculous when you already get other benefits from PvP.
  18. Tee hee. I have to say, I've been reading all sorts of ticked-off, fanboi vs troll posts all day (because they're like train wrecks - you can't help but NOT read them), and this has definitely made my day. Thank you people who way overthink things just like I do. You validate my life.

  20. As a rather new character, I find this all a bit depressing. I'm not a hard-core crafter, but I enjoy making entertaining items from time to time. When I played WoW, I became an engineer purely for the Flying Machines and the Chopper (which I admittedly never got, as I never made it past lvl 74). I think it would be great if we had some sort of vanity item in this game. In fact, we may already - our ships. We've all got one, and we obviously spend a bit of time there. I think it would be great if we could further personalize them and then show them off somehow. Armstech people and armormech people could upgrade weapons and armor on the ship (respectively), and then maybe display crafted stuff on the walls inside. Cybertech people could make shield upgrades and little consoles for games or jukeboxes or the like inside. Synthweavers could make... epic seat covers? Or maybe tapestries? Idk. Obviously the idea needs some work, but I would be more than happy to unload a ridiculous amount of creds on pimping my ride, and I can't be the only one... (or maybe I can. We'll see.) Anyway, thanks for the info everyone, and I hope as the game is updated and evolves, they can make crafting more worthwhile. Tootles.
  21. Well we've strayed from topic a bit here. But I feel like adding my 2 cents to this one. Truthfully, I really don't know what Lucas' stance on canon is, and in this particular case I don't think it completely matters. If we are to judge everything that happens in this game purely off of what happens in the movies, then there just wouldn't be room to make all of these fantastic stories. Yes some of the expanded universe stuff may be ridiculous, but I have to say that most of what I have read I have quite enjoyed, and hasn't broken the illusion of the Star Wars universe or story for me in any way, shape or form. Moreover, it gives the writers of this game more to pull from and use. If we went purely by the movies, Jedi Consulars, Sith Inquisitors and Imperial Agents really wouldn't have any basis for existing - unless I'm mistaken there's nothing in the movies to differentiate these classes from Jedi Knight, Sith (a conglomeration of what we're calling the Warrior and the Inquisitor) and bounty hunters. Yes it makes sense that all of these things could have existed, but there's no proof for it in the movies. I think to argue that something doesn't fit in this game purely because it was not in the movies is a moot point. Not to be antagonistic or anything I do have to say, though, that I quite enjoy these discussions. The SWTOR online community is by far one of the best game based communities I've ever seen.
  22. This is an intriguing question. One thing to remember on the differences in the games and movies is simply that one hell of a lot of time has passed, and that could definitely have an impace on how the Hutts operate. As for how the Hutts are able to not fall apart, I've been doing some reading on the site recently, and I found some background on a Hutt (can't remember which right now). I seem to remember it stating that, once a Hutt has acheived control over a rather large area, s/he can chillax and indulge himself/herself. This implies that, though there is a fair amount of warring among them, the Hutts do have a sort of reverance for those who have already attained what they are striving for. If this is so, it seems completely plausible that there is one or two Hutts that control a majority of their sector of space, and employ a bunch of Hutts below them, and that these one or two control a majority of the Hutt fleet. Yes, the Hutt(s) in these positions of power probably change hands regularly, but if the soldiers in the fleet are used to this, there's no reason that their duties need to be interupted - they just report to a new Hutt every time it happens. It would be an unsteady society, but I could definitely see how it could work (ish). The same can be said of the sith - though they're constantly grabbing for power, there is the Dark Council, whose ruling most sith will bow too. As we too know, the Dark Council is a rather new phenomenon, and it will most likely not last very long, which is why in most settings we only see a chain of a few sith in control of a large number of non-sith soldiers.
