Yes, hes just a bonus to try out your new light saber. It has nothing to do with anything else in the game. You just loose the points and what ever he may drop.

It seems that only the strong ones can infect you. Put your companion on passive,attack a group of infected. Or let him attack the weak ones and you target tje strong one. After he beats on you for awhile you'll see the infrcted thing pop up above your picture.
