  1. Linux gaming isn't dead. Sadly it is just going towards phones and tablets. Go look up the stats on how many people bought games for Android/WebOS devices in the last year. Still though there is hope as tablet graphics start to catch up to a "good enough" point that the companies might start offering Linux desktop editions. Linux just needed someone like Google or Ubuntu to pick a "standard" when it came to things like audio drivers. In the past it would have been nearly impossible to support any Linux game as every distro was using different audio drivers. For better or worse, it looks like PulseAudio has won. Back to the subject at hand, I do wish they would fixed this issue. It is hard enough to get WINE to work with documented win32 usage. Then companies do some crazy hacks and everything breaks. SWTOR and Dungeon Defenders are the only things that keep Win7 as my default desktop. KDE and XFCE are just so much more customizable. And not needing some "pro" version to do things like remote desktop and having to use putty to ssh into my server. And heaven forbid companies making Windows programs offer the x64 compiled version.
  2. Wait both your ViDock and laptop started smoking? Are you sure it was set up right? The ViDock should handle the graphics, leaving the laptop relatively cool. I can see the ViDock overheating though. The design is pretty crap if you have it laying flat down. Not nearly enough air gets under it. Also no one else in this thread has any idea what the ViDock is. Edit: What card did you have in it? They are only rated to 225Watts. Most current gen cards use far more then that at full load. The 6950 for instance uses 250 or so. Any of the fermi based NVIDIA cards will easily use closer to 300 watts.
  3. In beta, cloth was gained from diplomacy. Apparently it was missed in whatever change moved cloth to underworld trading.
  4. Definitely agree with this. I've done 500k healing before and only got 3 medals. 2.5k heal, 75k healing, 300k healing. No mouseover healing just compounds the issue as it is hard to do much damage or cc when constantly changing target.
  5. I would be very hesitant. The V120 was basically a challenge to the intel Atom. Very low power, but also fairly low performance. It performs about as well as a late model Pentium 4. That is below the minimum requirements. It is also only a single core. I don't have one to test. But I'm surprised that can even run Windows 7 fluidly.
  6. This is wrong. Animations are handled client side. Abilities firing is of course server side. What you are seeing is the game starts the animation instantly, it then waits for confirmation from the server. The most likely reason they don't want to lower the gcd because of animation is because they were timed out to look nice at that speed. It has nothing to do with it being impossible or because damage is based on animation. What you are really asking for is to hide it from the player, because the internet is bound by the laws of physics.
  7. The Hero engine came with the promise of many people editing a world in real time. Placing unit spawn, timer events, and environment object. Bioware most likely bought the sales pitch and figured they could focus on story and other aspects they felt were more worthy of their time. It wasn't till basically too late when they noticed that the real time editing of the world basically wasn't possible at the scale they wanted. This was probably a major reason for much of the delay.
  8. I think you must have missed some bonus series. Without doing any PvP or heroics I stayed pretty consistently over the suggested level all the way to 50. Not all of the bonus series are for the same level as the rest of the planet. I really think there should be a few quests to send you back to point those out better.
  9. If they ever get a macro system in I hope it is like Rifts (1 ability, but if condition fails it goes to the next.) It would definitely cut down on some of the tedium. On the smuggler for instance, I would make a macro that would be something like /cast "back blast" /cast "blaster whip" /cast "Quick Shot" That way if i was behind it would back blast, if blaster whip was off cooldown it would do that, and finally quick shot would be the fall back. That right there would condense 3 keys into 1. This would allow me to move up some of the defensive abilities to easier keybinds. The problem I'm having is I have so many abilities I use in every fight that my "oh crap" abilities don't have any good binds and yet they are the ones that when you need them, you need them now. Also as others have said, why aren't abilities like flechette rounds just baked into the 2 abilities that use them. It feels so clunky. Also I hope there are some proc'ing relics. Who has room for another 2 hotkeys for those? A stealth bar would also help. Or at least combine the cover and stealth bar, as scoundrels don't use cover. EDIT: Just counted the number of hotkeys I'm using on nearly all elite mobs, 19. I'm all for having a good arsenal.. but that's getting a little crazy. I wish i could micro manage my companions abilities, but I just don't have enough hands for that.
  10. There have been anatomically modern humans for almost 200,000 years now. Yet if you look at technological advancements they generally come in spurts. A 3,000 year stagnation isn't all that much. Generally large leaps forward require equally large breakthroughs. Another factor to consider is that there is a best way of doing things. And reaching it generally takes exponentially as much investment for decreasing returns. While they don't seem to follow all our rules of physics, if we assume they still have a rule set then there must be a peak. It might be simply that they are being limited by physics itself in advancements. You can only make a wheel so round. The thing that should be different though are things bound solely by personal preference. Things like clothing. It is far more unlikely that the same fashion would persist as long as a space craft that is already capable enough. Though fashion can go in cycles..
  11. But what if he does intend to do them? Many of the heroics and things he might not of got to solo the first time around offer titles and whatnot. If he could keep them in his log he wouldn't have to go around and check every quest hub later on to make sure he picked them all back up again. The fact remains that it doesn't hurt game play in any way to allow more then 25 or if it does I'd like to know how.
  12. Either check in the bios or use CPU-Z or some other software that will list ram speed. Make sure it is running at full speed. Many times a computer will change to a safe mode for ram when it is changed. Since you only have the onboard graphics card it is using a portion of your ram for the graphics. So ram speed is doubly important. Generally if you got a bad stick of ram you would know it. Usually things like trying to copy a large file or even just loading a game like SWTOR would fail. You can always run memtest though to double check. Last thing to check would be in the bios. Make sure the gpu is still set up to grab ram space for itself. Not sure why they would get turned off, but stranger things have happened. The Intel HD3000s aren't terrible. They aren't good by any means, but they are about at the same quality as the gpu in the xbox360. Of course it is easier for console game makers to optimize for 1 platform.
  13. If I had to guess. I would say it is probably just something that got overlooked. The item base for the game changed pretty drastically in the last few builds. Orange wasn't added until relatively recently. In earlier builds it seemed most items were just the sum total of their mods.
  14. Personally I think the side quests feel so grindy because of the lack of impact they have at all in my characters world. Oh you went into that imperial base and cleared them out and saved the day! To bad if you go back there they will all still be there and you apparently just wasted your time. I'm not asking for a dynamic world, but it would at least be nice for a current gen mmo to have some phasing. To make it seem like you made a mark on the world. All the cutscenes in the world can't change the fact that you are in the exact same place you were before as soon as they end. I know there are a lot of hassles with it and trying to deal with people that are on different stages of quests and what not, but it is definitely worth the effort. As it is, the only places that you can somewhat change are in group phases that you can never enter again once completed.
  15. I agree. I've never understood the reasoning behind the 25 mission cap. There are a few mmos that use it and it doesn't exactly make sense. I wish i knew the reasoning behind it other then to be a hassle.
  16. Is your mission log full by chance? This is the warning you get when it is. It is a fairly poorly written error message as it makes it sound like there is a mission you need to do first.
  17. To answer the title question. I would say no, orange gear isn't a problem. All non-orange gear is the problem. Why make a cool system of allowing people to upgrade their gear if they like an armor model and yet not offer it on everything. Greens are nothing more then vendor trash. If they were just the sum total of their mods at least there might be a minor upgrade with one here or there while leveling. Personally I think they should get rid of the orange color completely and go back to having the color be determined by the average of the mods in it. You could further divide that by character level. A system very similar to this was in beta and I still haven't figured out why they scrapped it and decided the large majority of items dropped should just be sold to a vendor and never worn or used. There was so much backlash when they changed it in beta and I'm unsure if they ever mentioned why they did it. It is certainly less restrictive than it was the first build after making moddable gear orange, but still only a shell of what it use to be.
  18. Try plugging your laptop directly into the router. This may be a wireless interference issue or a wireless driver issue.
  19. If you want to talk basic. How about starting with no /random, no basic macros (such as putting chat text with an ability), and no %t to save you from having to type out your targets name. I still have a hard time believing /random or /roll wasn't put in a game in a genre that basically everything is built on top of a random number generator.
  20. I wish they would have had all items be modable. As it is, even leveling green items might as well just be grays. If they had mods at least you could potentially grab a mod out of them for a slight upgrade. It is probably my favorite system introduced by SWTOR and I was sad that it was scaled back in beta. Between crafted and commendation mods it is easy enough to keep all your orange gear up to date. So many item models are just going to waste.
  21. If I had to guess, much of the delay is probably transferring you to the next server. A fast SSD only goes so far. Eventually you are still waiting on the server.
  22. Actually according to those requirements his video card is below them. The geforce 7800 gt is more powerful than a 240m. Even if it is a good 5 or so years old.
  23. They are just saving you the hassle of having to remember and calculate it on your income taxes. Oh you didn't ever do that? Well in that case they are saving you the hassle of breaking the law.
  24. Maybe it is just me, but if you are only worrying about the people in your group then you are doing it wrong. Healers have stuns, interrupts, snares, and cc as well. Not to mention damage when healing needs are light and your at full energy. All of which are easy to use if I don't have to change my target back to a party member every other cast. Most of the anti macro/mouseover crowd seem to think we want this functionality so we can do less. I want these tools so I can manage more of my abilities without the UI getting in the way. No one is asking for some addon to pick which ability to use. Personally I don't think this game has done anything creative with healing. At least Rift and Warhammer had a couple variations on the standard whack-a-mole game type (chloro for rift, blood mage? for War) that WoW started (which at the time was years ahead of eq healing chains.)
  25. A 32bit program running on a 64bit version of windows with the /LARGEADDRESSAWARE flag turned on can only use 4gb of ram max. If it is listed as using more then that something is wrong.
